If you have ever played Pokemon Go, you’d be able to draw parallels between Charmander and Mohammed Siraj.Β
When first seen playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the pacer had a very weak set of attacks and the little flame within him failed to impress the critics.
He’d often let his master (in this case his captain) down by biting more than he could chew, embarrass himself on big stages, and was arguably one of biggest reasons why his squad would struggle to stand toe-to-toe against the competition.
Mujhe Abhi Tak Ye Samaj Nahi Aaya Ki RCB Aur Sabne Mohammed Siraj Main Kya Dekha..
Har Match Main Jyada Run Deta Hai Aur Jitte Hue Match Ko Harra Deta Hai.@imVkohli Plz Take This Serious Bhai #KXIPvRCB
    β€” INDIAN FIRST (@Pravnrajchandak) April 13, 2019
Year after year, RCB would give their fans hope but by the time the season would end, they would have disappointed their massive fan base again.Β
A major portion of the resulting hate would fall in Siraj’s lap in the form of sarcastic memes to outright brutal comments, enough to destroy a person’s confidence.
In 2019, the pace-man made nine appearances for RCB and got thrashed for 38.42 runs on an average, per game. He only just seven wickets throughout the season and his economy rate of 9.55 made the franchise fans scratch their heads thinking about the reason why he was still around.
It’s hard to understand why @imVkohli is still having Mohammed Siraj in the @RCBTweets team after so many disappointing performances by him. #IPL2019 #KXIPvsRCB

    Then something unusual happened.Β
Making his return to the Bengaluru squad, that has shown an enormous amount of faith in him over the years despite his lackadaisical performance, Siraj made some significant updates to his game during the 2020 edition of the IPL.
Once again, he played in nine matches but this time, he gave away just 21.45 runs per game and his economy capped at 8.68 - almost one whole run less every single over.Β
He also took 11 wickets with an incredible 3/8 performance (with two maiden overs in a single game), he set his personal best against the Kolkata Knight Riders.Β
Siraj was evolving!Mohammed Siraj is our Man of the Match for his brilliant bowling figures of 3/8.

Absolute gold from the pacer.#Dream11IPL pic.twitter.com/OCt6VeB93G

But one final step of evolution was still left for our Charmander to become the mighty Charizard.Β
Siraj was yet to transform into a genuine weapon to finish games for his side. This is where his experience during India’s tour of Australia came into play.
Bruised and broken, the Men in Blue ended up leaning on Siraj to provide some pace to their attack after names like Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah were sidelined with injuries.Β Β
Despite having a great IPL season, fans still had their doubts. But the man delivered. Whether it be the white ball or the red ball, he became equally effective.
What. A. Match!@RCBTweets prevail by 1 run. With 6 needed off the final ball, Pant hits a boundary but @DelhiCapitals fall short by a whisker. Siraj does well under pressure.

The final over of the match against Delhi Capitals on Tuesday…  That was when he reached his final form of evolution.Β
Before the over, Kohli could be seen having a small conversation with his bowler as he asked AB de Villiers to give them some space. What he told him, we may never know but then the kind of balls he delivered, left Rishabh Pant completely helpless, even though he just needed to score 14 runs to win it all.Β
Despite his best efforts to send the ball flying over the boundary line for a maximum, the best he could do was fluke a four on the penultimate delivery which left the southpaw batsman frustrated with himself.Β
Here’s how the fans reacted to Siraj’s final evolution:
Take a bow Siraj what a transformation. Right up there with the best indian bowlers atm

As the number of positive coronavirus cases continues to rise to horrifying levels every single day, the controversy around the continuation of the Indian Premier LeagueΒ becomes more and more complicated.
Many believe that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)Β should simply stop the tournament, because of the kind of struggle the entire country is going through and hope to use their resources towards the betterment of the country.

On the other hand, several also believe that the Indian T20 tournament is actually good and must continue as it provides some form of entertainment, something to look forward to every single day and forget their real-life worries, albeit for just a couple of hours.Β Β
It is believed that the tournament also plays a crucial role in keeping a lot of people indoors (to watch the matches) as opposed to wandering out on streets which would further add to the contagion outbreak.Β
Many respected members of the cricketing community have come forward to share their thoughts on the topic of discussion and the president of the Indian cricket board, Sourav Ganguly has already guaranteed that IPL 2021 will progress as planned.Β
β€œSo far, it's going on as scheduled,” says BCCI President @SGanguly99 #IPL2021 https://t.co/DYvXxiClvm
    β€” Circle of Cricket (@circleofcricket) April 26, 2021
Under such circumstances, Rajasthan Royals Pacer, Jaydev Unadkat shared his humble opinion while giving a whole new perspective to the crisis.Β
β€œThe IPL is not entertainment. There is no entertainment this year whatsoever. It’s work for us. It’s our livelihood and also helps thousands who are part of the ecosystem,” Jaydev Unadkat told Sports today.Β

β€œMy family was infected and I did what all of us are doing. Tried getting them medicines and medical help. We are in this together. If we can spread the message using our platform as cricketers that’s our way to help. We can’t be doctors. But we can definitely be helpers,” he said.Β Β
While the majority of the fans of the IPL feel that the league is only about the top-tier cricketers like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, there are thousands of people who are associated with it and their livelihoods depend on whether or not the tournament continues.Β Β
Yes, the nation is bruised and limping at the moment and millions are struggling to make ends meet but by cancelling the IPL, we may only add to the misery of some more people.

The second wave of the coronavirus in India has led to all sorts of troubles in the country, both for the common people and the sportspersons who became a part of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2021, with the hopes of having a good season, free of ill-health or injuries.
Already, three Australian players have announced their departure from the league for this season and are experiencing an exodus with the lack of support from the Indian and the Australian governments, with regards to their travel plans.
Australian cricketers won't be given priority to return from India, Prime Minister Scott Morrison saying, "they've travelled there privately". #auspol pic.twitter.com/LPhV462YID

However, when it comes to international concerns being made towards India and the world’s biggest, most devastating COVID-19 outbreak ever, the Aussies have also shown a lot of empathy and willingness to support the cause in whatever way possible.
The greatest example of this was seen earlier in the week when one of the best pacers in the world, Pat Cummins donated $50,000 to PM CARES COVID-Relief Funds with the expectation that the money will be used to buy oxygen cylinders.

    β€” Pat Cummins (@patcummins30) April 26, 2021
"There has been quite a bit of discussion over here as to whether it is appropriate for the IPL to continue while COVID-19 infection rates remain high," Cummins wrote.Β
"I'm advised that the Indian Government is of the view that playing the IPL while the population is in lockdown provides a few hours of joy and respite each day at an otherwise difficult time for the country.
"As players, we are privileged to have a platform that allows us to reach millions of people that we can use for good. With that in mind, I have made a contribution to the 'PM Cares Fund,' specifically to purchase oxygen supplies for India's hospitals."
A day later, all-time Australian legend Brett Lee announced that he had donated 1 bitcoin towards the same cause which would essentially mean approximately Rs 42 lakh to Crypto Relief.
Tons of fans hopped on to Twitter to ask the former cricketer β€˜thanking him’ for not donating the amount to the PM CARES program like Pat:
Thanks for the awesome support, Brett Lee. And thanks for not giving the fund to PM Cares. You are both kind and smart. 🏼
