‘ICC Equals BCCI’ Foreign Fans Rage As Ganguly Replaces Kumble As Cricket Committee Chair

The president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sourav Ganguly is all set to replace Anil Kumble as the next chair of the Men’s Cricket Committee in the International Cricket Council (ICC), according to reports.

Before Ganguly’s appointment as the chair, Kumble was trusted with this responsibility back in 2012, replacing the West Indies legend Clive Lloyd. The Indian spinning maestro was later reappointed in 2016 for a second successive term. In March 2019, Kumble started his third and final term, which is coming to an end in 2021, spanning a time period of nine successful years.

In his stead, Ganguly, who was an observer, a rather smaller role within the ICC, is now being promoted to the position of the committee chair. According to media reports, one of the key duties that the former Indian skipper will have to look after is to maintain the rules and regulations of the game across all cricket-playing countries.

Over the years as the BCCI president, Ganguly has proven that he was not only a great leader on the field but also in the administrative department. Having taken some really progressive steps such as bringing Pink Ball Tests to India, revamping the image of the National Cricket Academy alongside Rahul Dravid and increasing the average salary of domestic level cricketers, Dada has managed to leave a mark for himself.

It is arguably because of his excellence in the administrative and managerial roles that the ICC decided to promote him with the global body. However, not everyone is equally happy to see the organisation getting dominated by Indian names.

Truly making it an Indian Cricket Council...

While Ganguly’s appointment as the new Committee Chair is a reason to be proud of how far Indian cricket has come, there is yet another reason for the Indian cricket board to feel good.

The ICC has agreed to take over the BCCI’s tax responsibilities for hosting three ICC tournaments on home turf in the years to come. India are set to look after the T20 World Cup 2026 in collaboration with Sri Lanka, the 2029 Champions Trophy and the 2031 ODI World Cup in association with Bangladesh as well.

While hosting events is a great responsibility, paying the heavy taxes to the government is an equally big pain and the ICC has agreed to shoulder those expenses, just like it does for all the other hosting nations.

“Every other cricket board gets tax exemptions from their government. But BCCI can’t expect the central government to bend its laws for us. Hence, all the members felt that the ICC should bear the damages. Anyway, BCCI generates the heaviest revenues by hosting events in India. The BCCI will not have to suffer any cuts from the ICC’s revenue pool,” a top BCCI official stated. This could help the Indian cricket board save at least Rs. 1500 crore over the three tournaments they will be hosting.
