‘Risking Families On National Duty’ Fans Bash The BCCI’s Special South African Arrangement

The Indian cricket team is currently setting itself up for their trip to South Africa three-Test series followed by as many ODIs in the final week of December and throughout January. However, with the growing cases of the highly contagious Omicron variant of the coronavirus, especially in the country, certain special arrangements that have been made for the team have rubbed their fans the wrong way.

According to reports, the BCCI has arranged for the Indian players and their family members to stay at a resort, and not a hotel, after reaching South Africa. This is done to avoid making the players feel stuck within their rooms, have some breathing space around them, and ensure that they don’t go through the mental fatigue of living in a bio-bubble.

Over the past year and a half, the Men in Blue, same as all the international cricket teams who have been on the road for bilateral series and the T20 World Cup tournament, have expressed the exhaustion of the mind while being confined to the walls of a hotel and only going to the cricket grounds for practices and matches.

Their fans, however, feel as if the BCCI are already taking a lot of risk allowing their cricketers to go to South Africa, one of the critical hotspots for the new covid variant and that they are doubling down on that risk by allowing their family members, including children, to be potentially exposed to the virus.

The Proteas have been extremely thankful to the BCCI and the Indian cricket team for making this series possible especially after many other countries with good ties with them had decided to cut off traveling routes ever since the origination of the omicron variant was first discovered by the scientists in South Africa.

Many, including the United Kingdom, was accused of imposing “travel apartheid” on South Africa and other African nations after putting them on the red list of travel bans, even though they were extremely efficient and transparent about the orinignation of a new variant on their soil, which allowed the rest of the world to prepare for the next chapter of the pandemic in advance.
