The Galaxy Note 9 May Get The Long-Awaited Display Fingerprint Sensor We've All Been Waiting For

The Galaxy Note 8 launched less than a month ago and we are a year away from the next iteration, which should be the Galaxy Note 9. Even though we would like to take a back seat, there's no stopping the rumour mill and sources are reporting that Samsung is working on something extraordinary.Β

Samsung has received components for review that might just be a part of a system that will implement the fingerprint sensor as part of the phone display. Ming-Chi Kuo, the infamous analyst with KGI securities reports the claim and he has been responsible for some of the most accurate leaks, predictions and rumours. He has been studying the electronics supply chain and identified three companies that might be supplying Samsung with the technology.

Companies such as BeyondEyes and Samsung's own Samsung LSI are in the running to provide the technology for future Samsung phones. A fingerprint sensor embedded underneath the screen has been in the works for a while now and according to analysts, the first to commercially market the technology would be either the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 or Apple's successor to the iPhone X. These reports also add more weight to previous rumours that suggested the Galaxy S9 would feature a display-based fingerprint sensor.Β

Samsung is expected to use an AMOLED screen to double as a light source for the sensor as it will also result in better battery life. The unlocking feature will probably work as simple as placing your finger onto a specific part of the display. Samsung and Apple both have been trying to get display-fingerprint display technology into product shipping in 2017, but both failed.

Kuo believes that a fingerprint-based security under the display might eventually lose its feasibility as it will be replaced by other biometric security methods. He told Business Insider β€œIn our latest analysis of recent under-display optical fingerprint recognition industry developments, we see Korean suppliers and Synaptics as having better visibility among suppliers. With regard to the latest biometrics technologies, however, we favour the 3D sensing segment.”
