One of the most-watched and exciting football leagues in the country, the Indian Super League (ISL) was aimed at finding budding talent at the grass-roots level and nurturing them in the presence of international icons. And, this year's edition has also seen an increase of local players in the playing XI after a restriction on overseas stars.
The likes of Lallianzuala Chhangte (Delhi Dynamos) and Sunil Chhetri (Bengaluru FC) have also ensured that the level of skill and competition elevates this season. But, while the cash-rich league continues to break new ground every year, the nuisance in the stands during matches remains an area of great concern.
The first incident, in this season, came to light when racist chants during the Bengaluru FC and Mumbai City FC clash echoed in the stands. The reports suggested that the some sections of the Bengaluru FC fans referred to Mumbai striker Achille Emana as a certain 'dark-coloured food item'.
Is this how you treat visiting fans @ChennaiyinFC @Supermachans ?? pic.twitter.com/XP5l6nA4el
— Khalid Mahmood (@TheReal_Khalid) November 23, 2017If that wasn't enough, another incident has hit the web during Thursday's match between Chennaiyin FC and NorthEast United FC. In a viral video shared by a spectator from the JLN stadium in Chennai, some local fans - especially one boy - is seen performing a vulgar dance in front of a group of northeastern girls.
Really disgusting behavior by some Chennaiyin fans against these Northeastern girls.
Football is all about mutual respect.
Hope we don't see any more of this anywhere.

While the Chennaiyin side absolutely massacred the NorthEast side to seal a 3-0 win, the nuisance by what appears to a home fan has undoubtedly brought a bad name to the Abhishek Bachchan co-owned franchise. A statement has also been issued by Chennaiyin FC who took to Twitter to condemn the act.
Chennaiyin FC has a very strict and firm policy against racism and any unbecoming behaviour in the stadium. The club strongly condemns any such act. We are looking into any such incidents and will take strong action against it. pic.twitter.com/0ZD2VjMCBM
— Chennaiyin FC (@ChennaiyinFC) November 24, 2017On the other hand, Chennai's star striker Jeje Lalpekhlua - who hails from Mizoram - also minced no words.
Hei hi kan ngai serious viau e. Investigation anti mek e. An man chhuah ngei pawh beisei ani ati tu te hi.
— jeje lalpekhlua (@jejefanai) November 24, 2017Taking to Twitter, the Indian footballer revealed that a thorough investigation is currently underway to get hold of the perpetrators seen in the video.
The NorthEast United club also issued a statement from their owner and Bollywood star John Abraham.
Statement: NEUFC stands by the the passionate supporters who faced untoward incident at the Marina Arena in Chennai last night. Here is a brief statement from our owner John Abraham. #Highlanders we are with you. #8States1United pic.twitter.com/ceej8iVvG3
— NorthEast United FC (@NEUtdFC) November 24, 2017Chennai fans have also condemned the shameful act with many expressing their displeasure as to why none of the bystanders interfered or came to the aid of the victims. On the other hand, the NorthEast fans labelled it as one of the various incidents of racism they go through in north and south India.
THIS IS RACISM! WE (NORTH EAST PEOPLE) ARE ALSO INDIANS. WE'RE SO HURT. Dear @IndianFootball and @IndSuperLeague, please identify them and take legal actions. There are lots of racism against NE in every corner of outside NE. #WeTooAreIndians #IndianFootball #HeroISL pic.twitter.com/zk9rdAwKgm
