Virat Kohli didn’t perform as well as expected in the T20 series against England and that is an undeniable fact. He has carried the team through many chases as a chase master, which is also a relatively suitable fact for his fans. And thus, I am not sure why this video of him answering a prodding question about his not so flagrant T20 innings against England is going viral.

A journalist’s job is to ask questions, often tough ones, no matter who is sitting across the table. And this is exactly what the journalist did in this particular instance. What the media picked up on, however, is the badass way in which Kohli replied. What we must remember though while glorifying Virat’s rebuttal is that the question was genuine but the whole context of it was lost in Virat’s sharpness of repartee.  

In victory or defeat, we as fans often forget that representing India is much more than a job for our sportspersons. It’s a matter of pride for some and therefore every fan inside a journalist has the right to ask tough questions when a player of the stature of Virat Kohli doesn’t perform to his potential. It might seem harsh if the failed effort is questioned after a series win like the one against England. But that is what journalists do, that is the nature of their very job, to ask tough questions even if it means stroking a few feathers in process.

The journalist was not at fault in asking the question even though the timing could have been a little better. For Virat though, nobody can doubt his intention when he plays for India and we know he’s no slouch when it comes to winning games for the team. So keep calm and enjoy the cricket on display, everything else is just plain noise.
