As technology takes over more and more aspects of our life, it comes as no surprise that wearables are no longer limited to just smartwatches or smart wallets, but also include smart clothing that looks trendy and is a part of our day to day life.

The Levi's Commuter jacket is a part of Google's Project Jacquard and is one of the first pieces of smart clothing available for consumers. The iconic bomber jacket combines Google's engineering efforts to bring wearables to the masses.

The Levi's Commuter jacket has Google's smart fabric woven in and has a bunch of smart features that can be triggered by gestures. The cuffs are touch sensitive, and with a simple brush or a swipe, you can control your music playback, turn on navigation and even respond to calls or texts without needing to touch your phone.

All of this is achieved by a Snap Tag built inside the jacket, which connects to your phone with Bluetooth Low Energy and can be set up by using an app. Another feature called Always Together will ensure that you do not leave your phone or your jacket behind and will ring and flash if you happen to leave one of them behind. Considering how expensive phones have gotten, this could offer some peace of mind.

"You can use Always Together to make sure you do not leave behind your Jacquard Jacket or phone behind. When your phone and your jacket are separated, you will receive an alert on your phone. Your Snap Tag will also light up and vibrate" Google says.

Talking about the jacket itself, it is a denim finish made of 100 percent cotton. The left sleeve has a pocket for easy access to the Snap Tag. It is not meant for extreme rough use as it can withstand only about 10 washes, of course, with the Snap Tag removed.

The jacket costs US$ 350 which is about INR 25,000. A little pricey for something that you can do with a simple smartwatch or a fitness tracker.

Though this is just among the first generation smart clothing and we expect to see more fashion labels get on board in the coming years.
