Virat Kohli vs Ross Taylor: Comparing 2 Of The Top Ranking ODI Batsmen Before India's Tour Of NZ

After India's eminently fruitful trip Down Under during which they succeeded in beating Australia on their own turf in a Test series and a bilateral ODI series, for the very first time ever since India began to play the game on an international level, the Men in Blue are all set to show what they are made of, against their neighbours, the Kiwis.

In a five-match ODI series against New Zealand, Virat Kohli, the best batsman in the world according to ICC's ODI rankings, will go head to head against NZ's finest, Ross Taylor, ODI ranked 3.

It seems like a tremendously exciting matchup to watch as both hitters are looking to find their top form with the 2019 ICC World Cup approaching.

With just hours to go for the battle to take place, let's compare what the two batsmen have been to provide to their teams and take them to victory:

In the 17 ODI matches Virat Kohli has played in between 1st January 2018 and today, he has put up 1,355 runs including a huge 160* innings against South Africa. With the batting average of 112.91, Kohli has been in form throughout the year, getting seven out of his 39 ODI tons during this time.

Taylor, on the other hand, has played like an elite himself. In the 14 innings between 1st January 2018 and today, the former NZ captain has made 920 runs in total with a batting average of 92.00. His extraordinary 181* knock against England comes to mind when remembering his skill set on the pitch.

If we go on the numbers, Virat Kohli, in terms of a supporting cast has a much better side with Rohit Sharma (World Rank 2) and Shikhar Dhawan (World Rank 9) as compared to Taylor's back up in Kane Williamson (World Rank 11) and Martin Guptill (World Rank 14).

However, considering the ODI series between India and Australia, it would be safe to say that Guptill and Williamson look a lot more in-sync as compared to Sharma and Dhawan.

While India (2) is one rank above NZ (3) in ICC ODI rankings, India's trips down there have not been too positive. Out of the 34 matchups there, India have only been able to win 10 till date with a series sweep back in 2010. The last time the two sides had an ODI series in New Zealand in 2014, India faced a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Kiwis.

But with the grand victories in Australia, Kohli's boys seem more confident than ever and are hopeful to have another great series before the World Cup.
