India Finally Grounds All Boeing 737 MAX Aircrafts Keeping Safety Of Indian Passengers In Mind

A Boeing 737 MAX 8 operated by Ethiopian Airlines crashed just a few minutes after take-off on Sunday, killing all 157 onboard. Just five months back, another 737 MAX 8 aircraft operated by Lion Air crashed off the shore of Java and all 189 onboard lost their lives.

Two crashes of the same jetliner within a span of five months has shocked everyone and the Ethiopian Airlines immediately grounded their MAX 8 fleet.

This was soon followed by China declaring a complete ban on the aircraft in its air space. Britain, France and Germany joined a growing list of countries to ban 737 MAX planes from their airspace as airlines around the world grounded the jets.

India's DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) has finally decided to ground the aircraft as well. The Ministry of Civil Aviation said the planes will be grounded till appropriate modifications and safety measures are undertaken to ensure safe operations.

Spicejet operates 13 MAX 8's and has 200 of them on order. Yesterday, the airline defended the plane saying "The Boeing 737 MAX is a highly sophisticated aircraft". It further added, "It has flown hundreds of thousands of hours globally and some of the world's largest airlines are flying this aircraft."

Even Jet Airways has 5 of them in fleet currently, but they have been grounded for weeks since the airline is undergoing payment issues with lessors. We expect Spicejet flights to be affected massively in the coming days since the MAX 8 contributes heavily to their network.

It's evident the local regulator came under immense scrutiny from the press and aviation experts after it released a statement yesterday that didn't warrant an immediate ban on the plane. In fact, the DGCA asked airlines to roster pilots with more than 1,000 hours of flying experience for the MAX 8. In comparison, the Ethiopian Airlines pilot had more than 8,000 hours of flying on record.

Flying the MAX 8 isn't about crew expertise and preliminary reports from the Lion Air crash have suggested a major software design flaw on Boeing's end. It is too early to say whether the two crashes are related, but we also cannot ignore the fact that the plane could have a serious design flaw.

Boeing said it understood the countries' actions but retained "full confidence" in the 737 MAX and had safety as its priority. The MAX series is its fastest-selling family of planes, with more than 5,000 orders placed to date from about 100 customers.

Please keep in mind, the affected plane is Boeing 737 MAX 8 and is different from 737 NG Family (737-700/800/900). The latter has been flying for more than two decades and has a spotless track record. The 737-800 is the primary workhorse of Jet Airways and Spicejet in India.
