In January, there were rumours that Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir is joining politics. Back then, he clarified all those rumours saying that there's no truth in it.
There have been speculative stories that I am joining politics. Please allow me to clarify that there's no truth in this. At the moment, I am merely a retired cricketer who like all of you is waiting for India's series win in Australia.— Gautam Gambhir (@GautamGambhir) January 3, 2019
What sounded as some baseless rumour two months ago has now turned into reality after the left-handed-batsman officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today. The announcement was made in the presence of BJP President Amit Shah and Union ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Arun Jaitley.

Reportedly, 37-year-old Gambhir is inspired by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is honoured to get the opportunity to join this platform. If sources are anything to go by, then Gambhir may contest the upcoming Lok Sabha election that begins in April, from New Delhi.
Twitter has been buzzing ever since the announcement was made. While some stand in support of his decision to join politics, others are trolling him for denying the news earlier and now joining politics.
Wish you well @GautamGambhir. Politics needs honest, committed people. Much as I admired your first innings, I hope your second innings is even better.— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) March 22, 2019
Delighted that @GautamGambhir who brought glory for India in the field of cricket has joined @BJP4India and has committed to actively serve the country from this platform, under the leadership of PM @narendramodi & BJP President @AmitShah

BJP is slowly building a cricket team. They always had good spinners. Recently they got a bunch of night-watchmen. And now #GautamGambhir has joined as opener.— Ramesh Srivats (@rameshsrivats) March 22, 2019 March 22, 2019
Why'd you deny and call initial reports baseless when that's what is eventually going to happen?
Also had seen this day roll out 6 months ago. https://t.co/BYC39EKK9D

Gambhir was recently conferred with the Padma Shri by President Ram Nath Kovind.
