IPL 2017 Witnessed Its First Super Over And Jasprit Bumrah Owned It Like A Pro

In the modern era of the sport where the pitches are tailor-made to suit the batsmen, the cricket bats continue to get bigger (no sweet spot, it's all sweet) and just four overs for the bowlers to make a mark, Twenty20 (T20) cricket has long been labelled as the batsman's game.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has proved to be no different. Whether it was Brendon McCullum's blistering 158 in 2008 or Chris Gayle's flamboyant 175 in 2013, the history of the IPL shows that the ever-evolving batting techniques continue to cut a sorry figure for the bowlers.

But then, if the batsmen could improvise, why not the bowlers? And, the tenth edition of the IPL is a classic example.

The bowlers have not only imrpovised the bowling actions, but also their techniques and delivery styles. The slower bouncer and slow yorkers are now turning out to be the nemesis of the explosive batsmen who once ruled this format without any fear.

The 35th Match of the IPL 2017 between Gujarat Lions (GL) and Mumbai Indians (MI) witnessed something similar. Against the likes of some of the most destructive limited-overs batsmen, one young Indian bowler prevailed like no other.

Phenomenal last over. Gujarat Lions had their moments but were denied by one of the best bowled last overs you will see. #Bumrah

In a great of show of accurate seam bowling, Mumbai's Jasprit Bumrah didn't just won the game for his side, but also proved why he is India's top gun in limited-overs cricket.

A game that was - for most parts - more about who wanted to lose it more badly, saw Mumbai somehow managing to tie the score at 153 runs against Gujarat. As the match entered into the Super Over - for the first time this season, the excitement levels shot off the roof.

With Jos Buttler and Kieron Pollard walking out in the middle, the Mumbai camp were expecting a better batting performance than what had actually unfolded earlier. And, Pollard's consecutive four and a six ensured that Gujarat needed 12 runs off the final six balls.

Whaaaaaaaaaaatt ! Two world class batsmen at crease ! Can't even hit a single boundary ! 😁👌🏼 #bumrah ! What an over man !

The target wasn't too big and in modern-day cricket, it surely wasn't impossible for batsmen like McCullum and Aaron Finch. But, even the T20 phenoms like them proved no match to Bumrah's artistry with the ball.

The 23-year-old bowled four yorkers and three slower deliveries (including two extra balls). Sticking to the basics, Bumrah gave away just six runs before stealing a five-run win for Mumbai in the Super Over.

In an effort that was lauded by the Mumbai camp and fans alike, Bumrah proved that T20 cricket is no longer just a batsman's game, rather it is rapidly turning into a format where bowlers are matching their counterparts for every stroke and restoring the much-needed balance to the game.

What a nail bitting match. I have no nails left. After a no ball & wide to bowl so well & keep his calm 🙏🏽 #Bumrah #GLvMI
