Ever since showcasing his talent during the 2018 U-19 World Cup, Shubman Gill has gone from strength to strength to emerge as one of the finest young talents in the country at present. 

The right-handed batsman has been in ominous form in the past few months which also saw him getting a spot in the 32-man squad for India's tour of Australia.

Turning heads with his batting performances in IPL 2020, Gill carried his fine form Down Under and bolstered his case for India's playing XI after scoring 43 & 65 in the warm-up game against Australia. But, Gill was overlooked in favour of his Under-19 captain Prithvi Shaw for the 1st Test where India failed miserably during their eight-wicket loss.

After waiting patiently on the bench, the Indian selectors handed Gill his Test debut amid notable changes in the line-up. While there was no doubt over his batting talent, it was the temperament of the youngster that made everyone doubt his success. But, unfazed by the weight of expectations, Gill went about his business in the manner he knows best.

The 21-year-old showed nerves of steel while negating the intimidating bowling attack of the hosts. Even as his opening partner Mayank Agarwal failed in both the innings, Gill showed great maturity and played with responsibility to aid India in key situations. 

He slammed a gritty 45 in the first innings before remaining unbeaten on 35 in the second as India romped to an eight-wicket win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

While Indian captain Ajinkya Rahane bagged the Player of the Match award, the contribution of young Gill in India's comeback win didn't go unnoticed. 

"Shubman, we all know his First-class career and in this game, he has shown the intent to play shots at this level. Has shown composure," Rahane said after the game.
