As Captain, Virat Kohli’s Intensity & Courage To Field At Silly Point Impresses India Fans

Virat Kohli has been having an incredible first couple of sessions of the third Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, after the Indian bowling attack dismissed seven of England’s wickets in the first 35 overs at the cost of just 93 runs.

Too few spinners selected will prove to be an issue.

When the official Twitter handle of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed the Playing XI for the penultimate Test, fans were shocked to see that the skipper had decided to walk into the grand Motera stadium with just two pacers in Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, while depending on the spin provided by Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar.

Kohli was criticised for presumably misreading the pitch to only have two pacemen in the final roster but as it turned out, it was the captain who had the last laugh.

Out of the first seven wickets, six have been picked by spinners and just one by Sharma in the third over.

Talking about taking risks and making daring plays, Kohli decided to place himself at what is considered to be the most dangerous fielding spot on the ground, the silly point.

Trying to add more pressure on the middle and lower order of the English batting lineup, Kohli positioned seven fielders around batters like Ben Foakes, Jofra Archer and Jack Leach, while asking for a helmet for himself at standing right in the hitting range of the oppositions.

As Mohammed Siraj ran towards the pitch with Kohli’s helmet, fans on Twitter started talking about the skipper’s boldness:

Virat Kohli channeling his inner Ricky Ponting by donning the helmet and putting himself up at silly point. Not to forget that appeal #IndvEng pic.twitter.com/YWgKaPXWbO

Virat Kohli calls for a helmet and decide to put himself on at silly point. 'Commitment - Virat Kohli.'

Playing only their third Day-Night international Test, the Indian cricket team have done exceptionally well, so far, even after losing the toss and being asked to bowl first.

As the series remains tied at 1-1 after the two matches at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium, both India and England will try to win the third and fourth Tests of the series in order to get the upper hand in the competition to make it to the final of the World Test Championship.

On the other hand, Kane Williamson’s New Zealand squad has already qualified to the final and are waiting for their potential opponents from India, England and Australia, which will be decided by the end of the ongoing series.
