‘Was Abused For Not Waking Up Early’ Dinesh Karthik Shares Unfair Demands Of Indian Fans

Dinesh Karthik has opened up about how some of the Indian cricket fans attached unreasonable expectations from him during the World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand last month in Southampton, England.

Making his debut as a commentator, the Indian wicket-keeper batsman did well, all things considered, to be funny, analytical and most importantly entertaining as a voice behind the microphone.

Unfortunately, he ended up doing a little too much by also becoming the ‘Weatherman’ at the Ageas Bowl cricket ground, when he began to share pictures and weather updates during what turned out to be a rain-marred event.

Speaking on the ‘22 Yarns with Gaurav Kapur’ podcast, DK explained how thousands of people began to abuse him for saying that it was raining at the venue and even for not waking up early enough to give them weather updates every single day.

“‘Weatherman’ is a very double-edged sword; I’ll put it on record. The first day, a lot of praise, the second day, very happy, the third day they started abusing me. I wanted to sleep yaar; I can’t wake up every day at 6’o clock to give a weather report.

“They took it too seriously on social media. They started abusing me saying, ‘Wake up! What the hell are you doing?’ in far more choice words that I can’t use on the podcast, just for not waking up, which was hard but you have to live up to their expectations I guess. I got abused for saying it was raining!” Karthik stated.

“Two things I got abused for were for saying it’s gray and it’s raining and the fact that I couldn’t wake up early to give the news. And a lot of it, I am talking about thousands of abuses. Not one or two, that I would have let go. Thousands saying ‘Wake up, wake the hell up’,” Karthik added.

Overall, Karthik’s new job is yet to reach the one-month mark. However, the Chennai-born cricketer has gotten in some serious trouble and even had to apologise on live television a couple of times for going overboard with jokes during matches.
