Karan Mehra’s Life Post Domestic Violence Charges Is Why A Man’s Story Also Matters

Every 15 minutes a woman reports a rape in India and very frequently we get to hear how women become victims of domestic violence when their families aren't able to arrange for dowries. All of us criticise the government in such cases for its shabby treatment of women's rights and rightly so.

But there are cases wherein the system is wrongly used for falsely accusing men too. It’s said that a man is innocent until proven guilty. We as a society have blindly accepted the fact that men, in the cases of domestic violence, are the ‘culprits’.

While there's no denying the fact that women continue to suffer, there are occasional cases where the law has been wrongly used to frame men. We hardly raise questions like, ‘Are men not vulnerable?’, ‘Is it possible that a man is a victim and not a culprit?’ and ‘How is he facing the society after domestic violence allegations which are not proven yet?’

Popular television actor Karan Mehra was accused of domestic violence by his wife Nisha Rawal.Their private conversations were accessible to the public and Karan was arrested for allegedly assaulting her and later released on bail.

In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, he has shed light on how all these allegations have affected him and how such charges can be troublesome for men.

1: A Disturbing And Emotional Phase

Karan Mehra has been fighting this battle since three months now and he has hardly spoken ill about their separation. Now, he has opened on the fact that it has been a difficult phase for him. He told HT, “It has been more than three months and I am fighting the battle. The matter is subjudice so I don’t want to talk much about it. I have not seen my son Kavish for more than 100 days, not able to enter my home or take my belongings. It has been an emotional, disturbing and painful time for all of us. We are fighting it as a family.”

2: A Man’s Tale Of Mental Harassment Is Hardly Considered

Karan opened up on how his family members were falsely implicated in the case. He also said that Nisha and her brother are staying in the house but his parents are made to go through such a difficult phase. He said, “It is not right to put my parents through all this, especially when my dad is a heart patient. It is quite disturbing. The proceedings, the process and the fight are not easy. I am out of my house while she and her brother are in the house, aaram se.”

3: Helplessness To Make People Understand That A Man Isn’t Always The Culprit

He revealed that he has proof of everything and how he has been wrongly accused but he doesn’t have to keep giving justifications to people about his innocence. He said, “You can’t go head-on in such matters. One can say anything about anyone but it doesn’t make it the truth. I don’t have to counter and give my safai to every allegation and not doing so, doesn’t make me wrong. It doesn’t have to be a public trial. Kavish will see stories online of our fights. Things are being handled legally and I will let things take their course.”

4: A Man’s Plight Since The Law Favours Women

This is true to an extent that law does favour women and Karan has learnt it the hard way. He shared that he feels sorry for men as the law often favours women. He said, “If a person like me is going through this, then one can’t even imagine what a regular guy must be going through. It is very difficult for you personally, family, people associated with you and for your work. Thankfully, I have so many people who have been supportive, which really matters to me.”

His statements are why we need to listen to men too before jumping to any sort of conclusion. What do you think of Karan's statements? Let us know in the comments below.
