Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan’s open US Senate race according to media projections reported by Reuters and Anadolu Agency. The Democrat defeated Republican Mike Rogers and is set to become the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.
The seat was held by retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters. El-Sayed, a physician and former public health official, reached the general election after winning his party’s primary. His election therefore combines a milestone in representation with the retention of a Democratic-held seat.
The issues behind the milestone
Reuters reported that El-Sayed campaigned on household affordability, reducing corporate influence and Medicare for All. Those policy commitments will be part of the scrutiny he faces as he moves from campaigning toward legislative work.
Anadolu’s reporting also noted that his religious identity became a target during the campaign and that he rejected allegations linking him to extremism.
For international readers, the distinction between senator-elect and serving senator matters. Election-night projections precede the completion of the formal electoral process, and the new Congress convenes in January. His record in office will develop after that transition.
