Malayalam Cinema’s Prince Charming Dulquer Salmaan is not a fan of the oft-used term ‘pan-India’ as he feels it can become an extremely restrictive lens to view certain films by.
According to him, movies can’t be made keeping in mind the tastes and sensibilities of the whole country, rather, the magic lies in the ability of such films to appeal to the country as a whole despite being made for a regional audience.

‘Pan-India’ is usually a label given to films that are successfully able to cross the language barriers, gaining viewership in quarters where they weren’t expected to.

Allu Arjun’s Pushpa: The Rise is a recent example of a film that gained ‘pan-India’ popularity. The trend, however, started a few years prior to Pushpa’s release, with the Baahubali franchise. Ram Charan and Jr. NTR’s upcoming film RRR looks to emulate a similar feat.

Baahubali, in particular, managed to sway the public away from the stranglehold of the Bollywood film industry. Created by SS Rajamouli, the Prabhas starrer was one of the first mainstream movies to create an active market in the Northern parts of India as well.

Ever since, most movies that bridge the gap between the South and the North of the country have been relegated to the phrase ‘pan-India’.
Speaking to PTI, Dulquer posited,  "The word pan-India really irks me. I just don't like hearing it. I love that there is so much exchange of talent happening in cinema, it's great, but we are one country. I don't think anyone says pan-America. I don't get it, even though they say it sweetly,"

Receiving rave reviews, Salmaan’s latest outing, Salute is a mystery-thriller with him in the lead role as a cop.

The actor has managed to amass quite a loyal fanfare since his 2012 debut, Second Show. Since then, he’s only further proven his mettle, with movies like Ustaad Hotel, Bangalore Days, and Kurup.
On what makes these films special, Dulquer shared, “You can't engineer a pan-India film. Those films that have actually travelled across India are the ones that were rooted and made for one market. If you try to do a 'pan-India' film, try to appeal to all audiences for different markets, it will not belong anywhere,” he said, before adding, “So, you make your film as rooted as it can be, tell the story of that land and mount it bigger, cast it differently and maybe put in a few familiar faces from different markets. I get all of that but I don't think you should lose the sensibilities or the culture of that particular story.”
You can watch Dulquer Salmaan in action as Aravind Karunakaran in Salute on Sony Liv.

The popularity of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is reaching new heights every season. This year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to generate over Rs 800 crores in revenue thanks to sponsorship and other deals.

The success IPL has managed to achieve and sustain over the years has not really gone down well with some of the former international players and cricket pundits, especially from England. Time and again they come up with negative remarks about the cash-rich league.
Recently, former England batter David Gower had blamed IPL for England's humiliating loss in the Ashes series Down Under where they lost the five-match Test series 4-0.
England went winless the whole summer...#Ashes pic.twitter.com/f6SeeWkh4N
    — cricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) February 8, 2022 A few months later, another England great David Lloyd slammed the IPL for damaging the traditional international cricket. With the 15th season of IPL approaching, teams who have their international matches scheduled are finding it hard to keep their star players available for international cricket as they had opted to feature in the cash-rich league.
South Africa won't have their full-strength squad available for the Test series against Bangladesh and even New Zealand will not field their best XI against Afghanistan.
However, it is a decision taken by players and even their respective boards are respecting the players' decisions.
South Africa are likely to field a weakened squad for the home Tests against Bangladesh, with all their Test players choosing to go to the IPL instead
    — ESPNcricinfo (@ESPNcricinfo) March 15, 2022 Despite that David Lloyd jumped the gun and targetted the IPL which is nothing but his own personal opinion.
"Already, South Africa’s full attack is not available for upcoming Tests against Bangladesh, and New Zealand have 12 men ruled out of selection versus Afghanistan. Make no mistake, the IPL is disrupting the traditional international programme," David Lloyd was quoted as saying by Mirror.co.uk.
Well, Indian fans know how to give it back to those who try to downplay Indian cricket and it was nothing different this time around as they took to Twitter to slam Lloyd's unnecessary criticism of the franchise-based league.
Every one in england is like that only keep peddling subtle negativity around Indian cricket and specially IPL
    — Ayush Srivastava (@sriman_ayush) March 20, 2022 English are rattled because its not their tournament in leading...its an indian thing and earning triple amount as compare to them
    — Kishan Sharma3 (@Sharma3Kishan) March 20, 2022 Had IPL been a English tournament they would have credited they would have hailed it
    — SHAIK KHURSHEED JAVED (@FadedJani) March 20, 2022 Wo dawid gower bhi ipl ko blame karraha tah eng test failure key liye aur psl mey commentary kar raha tah.
    — Name Is Name (@lonewolf7826) March 20, 2022 Interestingly, Lloyd used to be a commentator in the IPL back in the day but now that he is no longer contracted by the BCCI, he is openly criticising the tournament for the downfall of overall international cricket standards.
Ironically, when former England players were busy blaming the IPL for their Ashes loss, it was one of the mainstays in the IPL Jonny Bairstow who scored the only hundred across five Tests in Australia.

Producer Savita Raj Hiremath, took to Twitter yesterday to point out the apparent double standards in the treatment meted out by the government to the new releases Jhund & The Kashmir Files. Starring veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan, Jhund was released on the 4th of March but has struggled to put out the numbers that had been expected of it.
The post by Savita Raj Hiremath, a producer for Jhund, says that she’s perplexed why her film wasn’t made eligible for tax-free viewing, as seen in the case of The Kashmir Files. “I recently watched Kashmir files and as the story of Kashmiri Pandits exodus its heartbreaking and is a story that needed to be told. It is a good voice for Kashmiri Pandits..!! But as the producer of JHUND I am perplexed. After all Jhund is also an important film and has a story and a Big Message that has received tremendous acclaim and word of mouth from audience.”
The producer of #Jhund FB post. #TheKashmirFiles pic.twitter.com/TSpetvUFh7
    — Harneet Singh (@Harneetsin) March 19, 2022
Jhund a film about a Nagpur-based retired sports teacher who pioneered a slum soccer movement should have gotten rebates similar to the ones received by the Vivek Agnihotri directorial, at least that’s what Savita believes, as she continues in her post, “I want to find out what’s the criterion on which govt selects a film to support it so strongly by making tax free, endorsing it through social media and asking Offices to showcase the film or give half day holiday to its employees. After all jhund also has a subject that is so crucial to our country’s growth..jhund is not just talking about the disparity between caste and economic disparity but also shows a way to make the lower strat of society find their success story.”
The Amitabh Bachchan starrer marked filmmaker Nagraj Manjule’s Hindi debut, having previously delivered critically acclaimed work with Fandry and Sairat. Despite a positive response from the audience, Jhund is struggling at the box office with it barely amounting to an estimated two-week total of Rs 17.25 crores.
Do you think Jhund would have performed better if it hadn’t been for the concessions given to The Kashmir Files? Let us know in the comments!

Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt is on cloud nine these days as her latest release, Gangubai Kathiawadi has turned out to be a huge hit at the box office. Her portrayal of Gangubai too has received an overwhelming response from critics as well as fans.
She is indeed in the best phase of her career and currently has various biggies in her kitty. After Gangubai Kathiawadi, she is now waiting for the release of SS Rajamouli's RRR alongside Jr NTR and Ram Charan. It is slated to hit the theatres on March 25 and the actress will be seen in a special role.
Besides RRR, her lineup also includes Brahmastra, Darlings, Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, and the Hollywood film Heart of Stone. While Alia is enjoying every bit of her success, there have been times when she rejected some big films which turned out to be huge hits.
Below, let's take a look at the biggies rejected by the Dear Zindagi star which were loved by the moviegoers:

The makers finally signed Sonam for Neerja who won several accolades for her performance.
Saaho View this post on Instagram
Directed by Sujeeth, Saaho was Prabhas' next release post the historic success of the Baahubali series. While Shraddha Kapoor played the female lead, the makers had first approached Alia for the role. According to rumours, she turned down the film claiming that the heroine's character solely supports the male lead and has nothing else to do.
Shershaah View this post on Instagram
Featuring Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani in the lead roles, Shershaah, the biopic of Captain Vikram Batra, premiered last year on Amazon Prime Video due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film won rave reviews and turned out to be a huge success. Indian Premier League (IPL) has changed the way cricket boards across the world think about their domestic cricket and it has brought a positive change across the world, as now most of the Test-playing nations have their own franchise-based league up and running.
There has been a recent comparison doing the rounds on social media where Pakistan fans and Pakistan Cricket Board chief Ramiz Raja have been trying to compare their Pakistan Super League with the IPL, even saying that they offer more exciting and competitive cricket as compared to the Indian franchise-based league.
PCB chairman Ramiz Raja plans to move the PSL to an IPL style auction format to replace the current draft system.

    What are your thoughts? pic.twitter.com/oSuR4i7rMG
    — Wisden India (@WisdenIndia) March 15, 2022
Echoing PCB chief’s words, Pakistani journalist Arfa Feroz Zake took to Twitter to state that PSL grew in an era where other countries too had their respective leagues and added that IPL grew only because there was no competition.
"No comparison between PSL and IPL! PSL started in 2016 while IPL was inaugurated in 2008. However one has to admit PSL gained worldwide popularity more quicker in an era when other boards had introduced their leagues too whereas there was no competitor in the market when IPL was born," he tweeted.

Uthappa said it was the IPL that created the market for others to follow.

Uthappa's tweet soon went viral as Indian cricket fans appreciated the 33-year-old batter for giving an apt reply to the unnecessary comparison between the IPL and PSL.

    — Nishant Sharma (@srcsmic_enginer) March 19, 2022Recently, the PCB chief too said that he will see who will pick IPL over PSL if he introduces an auction model in their league just like IPL instead of the current draft model. And as expected, he faced a lot of flak from Indian fans over his comments.
Other leagues are slowly gaining popularity but when it comes to IPL, no one even comes close to the Indian franchise-based T20 league.
2022 has already turned out to be a great year for #IPL. It's been raining sponsorships.

For the first time in 15 years, IPL has sold all its sponsorship slots. Collectively, close to Rs 1000 cr has come in.

Saudi oil company Aramco has bagged rights to Orange & Purple Caps.

The management of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is anxious about England National Cricket Team all-rounder Moeen Ali's visa concerns delaying his arrival.

Moeen Ali, the star England batting all-rounder, shone for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, playing a significant role in the team's victory.
As a result, he was retained by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction for INR 8 crore.
Two England players retained by their IPL franchises for 2022: Jos Buttler at Rajasthan for Rs. 10 crore (£1m approx) and Moeen Ali at Chennai for Rs. 8 crore (£800k)

Archer, Bairstow, Stokes etc. should be in line for big paydays at the mega-auction
    — Matt Roller (@mroller98) November 30, 2021
Meanwhile, Moeen submitted for his Visa on February 28 and has yet to get travel documents, according to CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also assisting the franchise in obtaining Moeen as quickly as feasible.
Crickbuzz quoted Viswanathan saying that it was on February 28 that Ali had applied for his visa which means that it has been submitted for more than 20 days. He has travelled to India several times but has failed to obtain travel documents.
CSK are hopeful he'll be able to join the squad shortly.
Ruturaj Gaikwad has started his training with the team. Heard Moeen Ali's arrival is delayed due to some visa issues only so he'll be here too. Chahar is the only one left. Hope he'll be able to join pretty soon as well. Everything's going pretty well so far.
    — Heisenberg (@internetumpire) March 19, 2022
The Super Kings have also requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to intervene, use their authority to fast-forward the whole process and have one of their top-performers in the squad as soon as possible, albeit the delays have already taken place.
However, Moeen Ali and CSK aren’t the only parties that are facing visa trouble with the league starting in less than a week’s time.
The newly formed Gujarat Titans are also in the same boat as the Ahmedabad-based franchise has added Abdul Naim from the United Kingdom and Mithun Manhas from Delhi to its coaching staff. Manhas has already joined the team, but Abdul Naim's travel documents have yet to be cleared.
