The sporting fraternity around the world is still coming to grips with the sudden demise of legendary Australian off-spinner Shane Warne who died of a cardiac arrest in a hotel in Thailand.
Amidst the tributes flowing in from all over the world, remarks of the legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar on a private news channel have angered the cricket fans. The ‘Little Master’ has been heavily slammed for his ‘classless’ comments that were devoid of empathy.
© Reuters
After getting bashed for his comments, the former India opener has now issued a clarification through an Instagram video and accepted that it was not the time to delve into any sort of comparison and he shouldn’t have answered the question asked by the news anchor.
Even while expressing his regret for his ill-timed comments, the batting legend tried to put the blame on the news anchor saying that such a question shouldn’t have been asked in the first place.
View this post on Instagram
“Last week was a very traumatic time for cricket fraternity as in 24 hours, we lost two icons of the game - Rodney Marsh and Shane Warne. On TV, I was asked by an anchor whether Warne was the greatest spinner and I gave my honest opinion,” Gavaskar said in an Instagram video.
“In hindsight, that question should not have been asked nor should it have been answered as it was not the right time for any comparison or evaluation,” he said.
© Reuters
“Warne was one of the greatest cricketers to have ever graced the game. Rodney Marsh too was one of the greatest wicketkeepers the game has seen. May their souls rest in eternal peace,” he concluded.
Comments that led to huge outrage “Look at Shane Warne’s record against India. It was pretty ordinary. In India, he got five wickets only once in Nagpur, and that too because Zaheer Khan swung wildly against him to give him a fifer. Because he did not have much success against Indian players who were very good players of spin, I don’t think I would call him the greatest. Muttiah Muralitharan, with a greater success he had against India, I would rank him over Warne in my book,” Gavaskar had said during an interaction on India Today.
© MensXP
Gavaskar owned up to his mistakes publicly and acknowledged that he was wrong in comparing the stats of the late leg-spinner with another spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan. At the same time, he insisted that although the timing was not right it was his “honest opinion”.
Once again his apology evoked mixed reactions on social media, with some fans praising the former India captain while finding faults in his ‘half-hearted’ remorse.

There were people who hailed the batting legend for leaving his ego aside and accepting his mistake out in the open on a social networking platform.
Owning up mistakes in public forum is always commendable
— Rohan Karkhanis (@RohanKarkhanis) March 7, 2022This is greatness, this is grace, this is humility - well done SMG ……
— Mohan (@Mohan51896108) March 8, 2022Sunny ji alwys maintains his level.. rectifying mistakes publicly..
Btw.. Rajdeep is boiling up my blood!
— Sirajul. (@iamsirajul) March 7, 2022 Then there were people who chided him for not thinking twice before opening his mouth. They were also not happy with him trying to get clean by levelling the blame on the news anchor for putting him in a spot.
You need guts to apologise but he don't have those so he is again blaming the question. @ShaneWarne will be the greatest spinner for the fans atleast.
— Sarthak Singhal (@IM007sarthak) March 7, 2022That is what he should have said when the question was asked… he could have easily said that this is not the time of comparisons…
— Ishiraj (@Ishiraj1) March 7, 2022To answer kyo diya, us time bolana tha, ye sahi time nahi hai answer Dene ka.
— #100thTestForKingKohli (@vinu_panibhate) March 8, 2022No amount of damage control works after you have tarnished your own and the image of the people who have just passed away by giving an opinion like that. The best thing would have been if he had stopped the reporter when that question was asked.
— Ranjit (@cranjit) March 7, 2022 Gavaskar is a well-respected name in the cricketing world and he can’t get away with blaming the journalist. Even though he was asked his opinion he could have easily told the anchor that it was not the time for any comparison.

People may have varied opinions as to whether Shane Warne was the greatest spinner of all time or not but one thing that can’t be denied is that he was the greatest wrist-spinner to have graced the beautiful sport that we all love.
Such was the mastery of his skill that the art of leg-spin bowling became synonymous with his name. From Saqlain Mushtaq to Muttaih Muralitharan, there were several off-spinners but when it came to wrist spin bowling the list started and ended with Warne.
© Reuters
He single-handedly won Australia the 1999 World Cup, winning Player of the Match in both the semi-final and the final. Warney, as he was popularly called by his friends, dominated the world of cricket like no other wrist spinner.
His untimely demise has left a void in the whole cricketing community and all of us who grew up watching the spin wizard weave magic with the ball are still struggling to come to terms with his death.
© Reuters
Throughout his career, Warne played against some of the greatest batters of all-time like Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara. Being an Aussies, he knew very well that given their quality sometimes bowling was not enough to unsettle them and he needed something extra to get the better of them. Thus, apart from mastering the leg-spin bowling he also developed the art of sledging.
But since he was so good with the ball in his hand, he hardly ever needed to sledge anyone. But there was one incident when he managed to get under the skin of the batter during a Test match back in 1999 and made him throw away his wicket.
© Reuters
The batter who took Warne’s bait was none other than the current BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, who also served as the captain of the Indian team for several years.
The incident took place during the 1999 Adelaide Test. Ganguly was batting with ‘Master Blaster’ Sachin Tendulkar and Warne was annoyed with the former’s defensive tactics against him.
© Twitter ICC
Recalling the incident in Warne’s documentary ‘Shane’, Australian great Ian Chappell said that whenever Warne bowled outside the off stump, Ganguly just kept kicking them away using his pads. It continued for the next three-four balls and it riled up the leggie so much that he ended up insulting the left-handed batter.
“To give you a classic example. Australia were playing India at the Adelaide Oval, and Shane had come round the wicket bowling to Ganguly. Now, Tendulkar was at the non-striker's end. So Shane bowled three or four balls wide into the footmarks – some of them didn't hit the footmarks so they didn't come back as much, and Ganguly was just kicking them away,” said Ian Chappell as quoted by Hindustan Times.
© Reuters
“And after three or four of these, Shane said 'Hey mate, these 40,000 people here haven’t come here to see you block and kicking the ball, they have come to watch this bloke Sachin play shots.' And about an over later, Ganguly ran down the track trying to hit him down the ground and he was out stumped,” Chappell added.
Warner perhaps knew that doing so would trigger Ganguly’s ego and he would go after him to teach him a lesson. His idea worked almost immediately as in his next over, the southpaw danced down the track in order to play a big shot but missed the line completely and the wicket-keeper broke the stumps.
Shane Warne's record in the #Ashes:
36 Tests
195 wickets – Highest in history
10,757 balls
11 five-wicket hauls
Four 10-wicket hauls
A legend pic.twitter.com/3HtwtN7fvH
— ICC (@ICC) May 12, 2020
This incident proved that Warne was a shrewd thinker who understood the opponent’s psyche and used it to his and his team’s advantage.

Veteran actor Jackie Shroff's son Tiger Shroff entered Bollywood in 2014 with Sabbir Khan's Heropanti opposite Kriti Sanon. Post the success of his debut film, Tiger delivered hits like Baaghi, War among others and established himself as an action star. However, did you know that he was brutally trolled for his looks initially?
View this post on Instagram
Last year, Tiger appeared as a guest on Arbaaz Khan's chat show Pinch. On the show, the Munna Michael star candidly talked about his past and reacted to being trolled for having 'feminine' looks in the initial days of his acting career.
He revealed being trolled for his looks even before the release of Heropanti. He shared, "Before the release also, I used to be trolled a lot for my looks. People used to say, 'is he a hero or a heroine? He doesn’t look like Jackie Dada’s son at all'. It was a deliberate move to play to my strengths".
View this post on Instagram
However, these trolls had a positive impact on Tiger and how he overcame all odds. He added, "Whatever I am today, it’s because of the audiences… As long as I’m number one in your heart, that’s what matters to me".
Watch the video here:
Well, that's a befitting reply to trollers. Don't you agree?
On the career front, Tiger was last seen in Baaghi 3 co-starring Shraddha Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh. However, the film underperformed at the box office as the collections were affected by the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. His lineup includes biggies like Heropanti 2, Ganapath trilogy, and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.
He will next be seen in Heropanti 2, the sequel to his debut film. Featuring Tara Sutaria as the leading lady, the film will hit the big screens on April 29. He is currently busy with the first part of Ganapath. For the sci-fi project, he has reunited with Kriti Sanon.
Bade Miyan Chote Miyan marks his first movie with Akshay Kumar. Touted as the biggest action entertainer, the film will be directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and is going to be a visual treat for fans.

Virat Kohli is the epitome of fitness and not even his critics can deny the fact that he is the fittest Indian cricketer in the current team.
Kohli takes extreme care of his diet and workout regime to stay in the best possible shape in a bid to perform to the best of his abilities day in and day out.
However, being a West Delhi boy, Kohli was always fond of food and was not too serious about his diet from the beginning of his professional career and only started taking his fitness seriously when he had an ordinary season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) back in 2012.
It was then the former India captain decided to take his fitness to another level and he has not looked back since.
"In 2012 IPL, I was my eating, Sleeping and everything habit was very bad and I was in total horrible shape and one day I just looked myself & felt this is not the example I should be setting as a sportsman and from that day onwards I changed everything in myself." - Virat Kohli pic.twitter.com/tmvqEHvzpK
— CricketMAN2 (@ImTanujSingh) December 26, 2020
The 33-year-old used to gorge on a lot of street food and has expressed his love for Chole Bhature on a number of occasions. Before turning vegetarian and cutting on meat in his diet due to a cervical spine issue, Kohli used to be fond of chicken and mutton rolls.
His love for non-vegetarian food nearly got him and his Under-19 teammate from Delhi Pradeep Sangwan in trouble when the duo was in South Africa.
Kohli heard about a place from someone that used to serve mouth-watering mutton rolls but the area was considered dangerous by the locals.
View this post on Instagram
That warning didn't affect Kohli who took Sangwan with him to that place and ate but they were chased by random people. However, the duo safely reached back to their place.
"He (Kohli) had been my room partner for seven-eight years in junior cricket. He used to love food, street food especially. He was a foodie, korma roll, chicken roll were his favourite. We were in South Africa with the India under 19 team, and someone told him that you get nice mutton roll at some place, but it’s not in a secure neighbourhood. Our driver too told us that food is nice but recently some fight took place around there and someone chopped someone’s hand there. I got scared, but he said, ‘chal yaar, wahan chalenge’ (no biggie, dude, let’s go) and he took me there too," Sangwan wrote in his column for the Indian Express.
"We ate and few random guys chased us, but we just drove our car back and only stopped after reaching our place," he added.
© Twitter Virat Kohli
The Delhi pacer also said that they used to tease Kohli for his chubbiness but he took his fitness to another level and went on to become one of the best match-winners for India in international cricket.

Twinkle Khanna has shared her take on the ongoing hijab controversy that has been making headlines for weeks now.
Sharing her thoughts on the controversial topic in her latest column for TOI, Twinkle stated that the choice remains with a woman whether she wants to wear a hijab or not, but she also finds it funny how a few religious leaders defend it by saying that it stops men from being tempted.
Sharing her column on Twitter, Twinkle wrote, “Life and rummy follow the same rules, a joker in your hand is better than an ace up your sleeve. Follow stand-ups instead of mystics and ministers, the only price you pay is the admission ticket, or even better, is included in your Netflix subscription.”
© Instagram/Twinkle Khanna
About the hijab row, she wrote in her column, “Burgas, hijabs and even ghungats for that matter have worked their way into becoming religious and cultural constructs. While I am not an advocate for any sort of veiling, it is up to the women themselves to decide without intimidation on either side. I must admit hearing a few religious leaders talk about how a hijab stops men from being tempted does make one chuckle. All these bhai saabs should sit down and let the stand-ups talk instead. Very few men would consider a woman's head an erogenous zone. Can you imagine date-night conversations that include, 'Wow your head is looking so hot today'? `Oh, thank you darling, I keep it in shape by trying not to get swollen-headed in its beauty.”
Check out her tweet below:

This wasn’t all, she also shared her take on the Ukraine-Russia war and praised the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.

She wrote, “Zelensky, a former comedian, has rightfully become a global hero. Baba Twinkdev, the only guru I would advise you to listen to and then ignore on alternate Sundays, did once say, 'Beta ji, life and rummy follow the same rules, it's better to have a joker in your hand than an ace up your sleeve.' After all, it's not former spy Putin's manoeuvres but Zelensky's stand-up act that has made the world rally to Ukraine's side”.
