Unless you have been living under a rock this past week, you would know that Europe is in the process of being torn apart by Russian President, Vladimir Putin.
Β© Reuters
Given that Russia is a major power in the worldβs crude oil and energy supply, and is still one of the biggest economic superpowers, the world is scrambling to react to Russiaβs atrocityΒ in a diplomatic way.
Β© Reuters
To add fuel to fire, Russia has now issued a threat to the United States as well as to the rest of the world, saying that there is a good βchanceβ that they might drop the International Space Station on India or China if the United States continues to impose its sanctions.
Β© Reuters
The Director-General of Roscosmos, the Russian equivalent to Indiaβs ISRO, Dmitry Rogozin issued a number of retaliatory tweets after the US continued to impose sanctions on the country during their invasion of Ukraine.

In one of his tweets, Rogozin saidΒ βIf you block cooperation with us, who will save the ISS from an uncontrolled deorbit and fall into the United States or Europe?βΒ
He added in another tweet, βThere is also the option of dropping a 500-tonne structure to India or China. Do you want to threaten them with such a prospect? The ISS does not fly over Russia, so all the risks are yours.β
Β© Reuters
The ISS, about the length of a football field, is orbiting at around 400 km above Earth. The research platform is home to four American, two Russian, and a German astronaut. The ISS is divided into two distinct territories. Broadly speaking, one half is for the rest of the world, whereas the other half is controlled by Russia. The Russian segment of the ISS is responsible for guidance, navigation and control for the entire complex.Β

For several years, there have been discussions of decommissioning the ISS and letting it fall back to the earthβs oceans in bits and parts, and in a very controlled manner. If the 500-tonne structure were to fall on land, or heaven forbid, upon populated land, the loss of life would be unimaginable.

Now, although this isnβt the official, government-sanctioned position of Russia, it is a bit worrying that one of Putinβs closest aides, and one of Russian governmentβs highest-ranked officials puts out statements like these.
