If there’s ever been a villain from the overarching comic book pantheon that has managed to create a cult following around them, then it has to be the Joker. The clown prince of darkness is one of the most feared and memorable comic characters to have ever been created.
There have been many memorable renditions of the laughing fiend, from Cesar Romero debuting the purple suit in 1966’s TV series ‘Batman’, to Heath Ledger’s iconic portrayal in 2008’s ‘The Dark Knight’, and the most recent reprisal by Joaquin Phoenix in 2019’s ‘Joker’. From the animated version of the character, Mark Hamill and John DiMaggio stand out for their incredible takes.

However, what has endeared the character to fans across the world is that the Joker - to put it simply - is unlike any other villain ever made. His signature cackle paired with batshit crazy, chaotic and sinister plans add to his universal appeal.

Perhaps more than any other reason, what makes him so admired by fans is the fact that the Joker wasn’t inherently bad, to begin with (at least in certain renditions of his backstory). As explored in the 2019 film, Joker, Arthur Fleck wasn’t an evil dude with an evil plan, he was an ordinary guy who was pushed to his limits by society until he had no other choice but to retaliate.
So if you’re still around and want to know the reasons that make the Joker the ultimate villain of all time, then read on:

Scary Despite No Superpowers - If you’ve followed the Joker’s lore for long enough then you might have stumbled upon the realization that the Joker has no superpowers. No elaborate suit of armor or meta-enhancements either, unlike other villains from Batman’s rogue's gallery, like Mr. Freeze or Poison Ivy. Yet, he manages to give the caped vigilante a run for his money.

You Can’t Reason With Him - The Joker cannot be reasoned with, and you shouldn’t try it either, you’d only succeed at earning his annoyance in return. Heath Ledger’s Joker delivered an iconic dialogue that captures the extent of his madness, “I’m like a dog chasing cars, I wouldn’t know what to do if I caught one, you know, I just do…things.”

He Doesn't Want To Kill The Hero - While other supervillains are busy trying to get rid of their arch-nemeses, the Joker sees Batman as the Yang to his Yin - 2 sides to the same coin. Thus, he embraces the fact that life is better for him with the Batman to trouble. And nothing captures the sentiment as well as Heath Ledger’s Joker saying, "This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. You truly are incorruptible, aren’t you? You won’t kill me out of some misplaced sense of self-righteousness. And I won’t kill you because you’re just too much fun. I think you and I are destined to do this forever…"

Even Other Villains Fear Him - The Joker is so feared, that he’s managed to scare other villains shitless as well. There’s a line from the clown prince’s lore about when villains want to scare each other, they tell joker stories. So what makes the big bad villains scared of him? Well, it’s down to his insanity and unpredictability, you never know what the Joker has up his sleeves. Quite frankly, even he doesn’t at times. He’s an absolute wild card without a Modus Operandi.

Does Anything To Hurt - While some villains may have a code of conduct or a line that they’re unwilling to cross, the Joker has none. His brutality is a stuff of legends. In the comics, he’s beaten Jason Todd (former Robin) to near-death with a crowbar, shot Gordon’s daughter and wife, and almost killed Tim Drake (another Robin.

Sense Of Style - There’s perhaps no supervillain more iconic than the Joker. Across all variations of his character, what has been constant has been his distinct purple and green attire. He makes two colours that shouldn’t work together, work. Truly a style icon, and what’s more, we’re sure that if he were real then he’d undoubtedly be sporting Villain’s ‘The Joker Eau De Parfum’.

Bollywood celebrities can sell everything from a bottle of hair oil to a sports car to the Indian audience. Stars using most of these products seem far-fetched (Salman Khan in a hawai chappals ad or Huma Qureshi endorsing Chaini mouth freshner), they do it because they get paid. However, the former Miss Universe Lara Dutta is certainly not one of them.

While talking to Campaign India, she was asked if she has ever said no to any brand endorsement. To which she revealed that she has, in fact, turned down ads in the past and why she continued to do so for certain products such as alcohol, cigarettes and sanitary napkins.

She said, “Yes, I have. I don’t associate with alcohol brands. It’s not because I’m a teetotaller but because I think content is really important. Whenever ads come to me, they need to be out of the box and I haven’t seen that with alcohol brands’ advertising. I won’t advertise cigarettes too. In the recent past, I was approached by a brand of sanitary napkins and I turned that down as well."

She further added, "I genuinely believe that it’s time we address the ecological impact that it creates and today there are other options available like menstrual cups which are much better. I want to be able to promote these kinds of products in the future. I believe in walking the talk. If I’m not going to use the product, I won’t endorse it.”

She does actively endorse brands which promote a healthy lifestyle. She has endorsed several brands in the past. She said, “I don't know the exact number of brands that I have worked with. I started off endorsing brands at the age of 16, as a model. I have pretty much endorsed every single product that exists.” But she admits to now picking brands that do good to society and the planet.

It’s great that she realises her responsibility as an actor and uses her platform to not sway her fans into buying something she doesn’t agree with or find problematic for the planet and people.

This move is commendable and we hope more celebrities follow her suit.

    2. ShaktimaanThe OG hero of our growing up years is coming alive on the big screen. Sony Pictures is producing it and while the titular role is still being planned, theories already claim Ranveer Singh has a strong chance of playing it.

    3. Chhatrapati Shivaji MaharajThe brave tale of a real life super hero will finally come alive. Directed by Nagraj Manjule, the story will chronicle the brave life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and tell the tale of how he established the Maratha Empire. The three part series will have Riteish Deshmukh playing the titular role and he is also the producer. "Ideally, we would like to make it in Hindi and Marathi but at the same time we are definitely open to exploring other languages. Once we make the film and if people think that we can take this film to other states, we will definitely try to do that. Because Shivaji Maharaj's father (Shahaji Bhosle) used to live in Karnataka of the current times. And a lot of forts over there and a lot of the Telugu area was also under him”Riteish said at an event.

    4. NaaginThe name says it all and playing the sultry ‘naagin’, we’ll watch Shraddha Kapoor turn into a shape shifting snake for her upcoming trilogy in Nikhi Dwivedi’s Naagin trilogy. “I keep giving the example of Spider Man, which is about a college-going boy who gets bitten by a spider and jumps from one building to another. We are equally ready for an ichchadhari naagin. It depends on how you want it to come on screen. Eventually, it is a fantasy. If a Spider Man or a Superman can exist, so can a shape-shifting snake. Twilight is one of the most successful films; it is believable because we know it is a fantasy,” he said in an interview.
