Rajangad Bawa’s U19 World Cup final performance against England was an absolute spectacle, to say the least. Scalping five wickets while giving away just 31 runs during his time on the pitch, Bawa not only became the first Indian to pick a five-wicket haul in a U19 World Cup final, he also became the first player in the world to do so since Pakistan's Anwar Ali in 2006.
He only added to his heroics with the bat in the second half of the game when his squad needed him the most. Coming in to bat at the number six spot, he smashed two 4s and one 6 on his way to a sensible and matured 35-run inning in 54 deliveries.
India 5th time World Champion in the Under19 Cricket World Cup, I Extend my Greetings to the Players, Support Staff & Man of the Match UTCA's Rajangad Bawa for taking 5 wickets in the final for #TeamIndia, May you all continue to serve Nation with Heartiest Dedication.#JaiHind pic.twitter.com/g7uBZFN92a

For his brilliance on both sides of the pitch, he was named the ‘Player of the Match’ in the U19 World Cup final. However, what he did next created even more buzz all around the cricketing world with people from every corner falling in love with his personality and character even more than they already did.
Following the Boys in Blue's four-wicket victory in the final match, Bawa and his skipper Yash Dhull were asked to speak with Welsh cricket pundit and former English county cricketer Alan Wilkins. While the two lads listened to Wilkins’ questions in English in a calm manner, they preferred responding to him in Hindi.
Some of the biggest and richest athletes who come from a non-English speaking background like Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo are absolutely fine and in fact, lauded when responding to questions in their native tongue.
But when it comes to cricket and its Indian fans, they make it sound as if not talking in English is a crime and start questioning the players’ abilities to be successful. However, this time around when Bawa and Dhull decided to give the interview in Hindi, Indian fans were proud and showed their support for the rising stars.
Yash Dhull and Raj Bawa's replies in Hindi to Alan Wilkins questions in English ... One of the best moments of the final!!
Hindi hai hum!! Proud Indians#U19CWCFinal
— Naresh Gaur (@passiveindian) February 5, 2022Also loved the fact the self assurance of Dhull and Bawa who were asked questions in English and replied in Hindi, the language they are more comfortable in. Is that the confident new India? https://t.co/lrLKq6VbJp
— Sandeep Budhiraja (@sandy_budhiraja) February 5, 2022We got in touch with Rajangad Bawa’s father Sukhwinder Bawa and asked him about this specific moment following the U19 World Cup final and he told us that he wanted Rajangad to give the interview in Punjabi if he was fluent enough to do so.
“Woh (Rajangad) apni matri bhasha mein jawab de raha hai na? Toh kya problem hai? Jisko samajhna hai samjhe, jisko nahi samanjhna… unke lie hum kuch nahi kar sakte (He is talking in his mother tongue, right? So what’s the problem. Those who want to understand, they can. Those who do not wish to… we can’t do anything about them,” he told us.
“I told him if he is fluent in Punjabi then he should give the interview in that language. The idea is to be able to say what you really want to say at the time. You shouldn’t hesitate or use a different language and end up saying something that you didn’t mean to.”
“It is our mother tongue and we should not feel ashamed of it. When cricketers from England come to India to play, why don’t we expect them to speak in Hindi? Language cannot be a yardstick to measure a player’s talents and success, or the scope he has of becoming one of the best in the game,” he says.
After lifting the U19 World Cup and coming back to India, Bawa was met with yet another incredible news. During the IPL 2022 Mega Auction that took place on the 12th and 13th of February, he got picked by Punjab Kings for Rs. 2 crore despite having a Rs. 20 lakh base price.

— Punjab Kings (@PunjabKingsIPL) February 13, 2022
We also spoke to Sukhwinder Bawa about the ongoing debate about whether uncapped IPL players should not be allowed to get more than Rs. 1 crore during the annual auctions and he shared his take on the issue through the lens of a successful coach and a parent of an IPL player.
At the moment, Rajangad is completely focused on performing well for Chandigarh during the first half of the Ranji Trophy before packing his bags and joining Shikhar Dhawan and the Punjab Kings for his very first IPL season in April.

The U19 Indian cricket team all-rounder Rajangad Bawa’s father, Sukhwinder Bawa talks about the discussion around putting a salary cap on the U19 players who get picked during the Indian Premier League auctions.
Ahead of the 2022 Mega Auction in Bengaluru, former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar had expressed concerns about young Indian cricketers potentially losing their will to become better athletes after suddenly getting crores of rupees while being picked for one of the 10 IPL franchises.

The fair bit to put 1 Crore cap for uncapped INDIAN players

Calling IPL contracts “easy money” Gavaskar had expressed that such deals have led to many incredibly talented cricketers losing their way and ending up nowhere to be found. In his Mid-Day article, the Litter Master wrote:
“Far too many get carried away and lose focus and are out of the game or seek the mirage of greener-looking pastures… Easy money has spoilt many a promising talent”. He further proposed a solution to deal with this issue by suggesting that all the uncapped players should not be allowed to get more than Rs. 1 crore in the auction.

On the second day of the IPL 2022 Mega Auction, Rajangar Bawa received a Rs. 2 crore contract to sign up with Punjab Kings. Despite his base price being fixed at a mere Rs. 20 lakh, a bidding war between Mumbai Indians, SunRisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings led to the rise in his total worth with the latter finally getting the top hand and welcoming the local lad into their roster.
So is Rajangad’s father worried about his son becoming an “overnight crorepati”? Absolutely not! In a conversation with MensXP, here’s what he had to say about the discussions around limiting the uncapped players’ IPL contracts.
View this post on Instagram
“I completely disagree with this (capping IPL contracts for uncapped players). It depends from player to player and their parents. Be it 1-2-3 crore rupees, it is a lot of money for any U19 player. But that does not mean that the player will put Rs 3 crore in a bag and go on a shopping spree,” he says.
“At least my son is not like that. I talk to him continuously and he is completely focused on the Ranji Trophy at the moment. We haven’t even spoken about the IPL money yet. It completely depends on the nature of the child and his upbringing, his parents and his coach,” he adds.
View this post on Instagram
“I feel that at 19 years of age, players are smart enough to know what’s wrong and what’s right. When I was 22 years old, I started working. For the past 30 years, I have been coaching, you can always maintain that composure.”
“For the past 3-4 months, Rajangad has not come back home, he’s been away on the (U19 World Cup) tournament and other series. He has his exams coming up and he might have to sacrifice his exams which means he could waste one whole year of academics… So whatever money that’s coming these young cricketers’ way isn’t bad and will only be used for the betterment of their families and themselves.”
View this post on Instagram
“If the (Indian cricket) board still decides to go ahead with it (putting a bidding cap on uncapped players) they will definitely do it giving it a lot of thought. However, I feel it depends on the cricketer’s family and the player’s own focus.”

People have this notion that models and everyone from the world of fashion and glamour come from these hoity-toity places, and that they are major snobs. Well, they are wrong.
© Instagram/shk_digital
Thanks to a photographer named Shareek Vayalil, a Calicut based daily wage labourer has found a new and a rather interesting new career - that of a model.
© Instagram/shk_digital
What is far more interesting in this entire scenario, is that the model in question is in his mid-sixties.
View this post on Instagram
People assume that people from certain sections of society, don’t tend to be good looking, and generally don’t deserve to be looked at again. Parakadavil Mammika or Mammi, the model in question here, certainly proves them wrong.
© Instagram/shk_digital
Shareek has shot actually Parakadavil for a number of campaigns and has helped him get a new lease on life. Not only was Mammi the face of a small, but widespread ad campaign for a local clothing brand, he has turned into a legit model.
Some of Mammi’s features, which come naturally to him, are qualities that top designers look for in their models. That epic looking beard, and lean, but fit physique.
© Instagram/shk_digital
Shareek had taken a photo of Mammi and posted it on his Facebook page earlier. The photo went viral for the labourer's resemblance to actor Vinayakan. This gave Shareek an idea and he cast Mammi for a campaign that he was shooting, after giving a rather dope looking makeover.
View this post on Instagram
The best thing about the makeover was that it was done on a rather shoestring budget. And yet, the 60-year-old daily wager looks like a million bucks.
© Instagram/shk_digital
In one of the sets of photos that were taken, Mammi was dressed in a rather well-tailored suit, a very neat and suave looking beard and haircut, whereas in the other set, he was dressed up in a rather simple and sombre grey coloured Bandhgala.
© Instagram/shk_digital
The videos and the photos that Shareek took of Mammi have gone viral, and truth be told, they are much appreciated by people.
© Instagram/shk_digital
The best in all of this? Well, it has to be the fact that Shareek helped the 60-year-old to set up an Instagram profile so that he can get more work as a model.
