Gangubai Kathiawadi is being directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and this is his first collaboration with Alia Bhatt who plays the titular role. The movie has been adapted from one of the chapters of Hussain Zaidi’s book, Mafia Queens of Mumbai.
The movie stars Alia as Gangubai Kothewali, a gun-wielding and one of the most powerful, loved, and respected brothel owners of Kamathipura brothel during the 1960s. Sold into prostitution very young, Gangubai became influential in the city, with notorious criminals serving as her clients.
The film will have its much-awaited world premiere at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival. Produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Dr. Jayantilal Gada (Pen Studios), the film is all set to release theatrically on February 25, 2022.
    Here’s the trailer:

The trailer has promised a movie worth watching and it’s Vijay Raaz’s character who has managed to steal the show. He has been appreciated for his character and he is playing a transgender in the movie. Despite his stellar performance in the trailer, people have apprehensions about a straight man playing the role of a transgender.
One of the users wrote, “Casting a cisman as a Trans woman and also brazenly making a racist joke, few Hindi filmmakers will never care about the mess they create, but they'll continue hurting communities of the country. 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' is a big shame!”
Another wrote, “Yes, Vijay Raaz nailed #GangubaiKathiawadi trailer. But, it’s sad that Bansali didn’t cast a trans woman for this role. The film industry should stop casting cis actors as trans characters!!!! Will Bollywood ever learn?”

Recently, Vaani Kapoor played a trans woman in Abhishek Kapoor's Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui. Both of them had to answer questions about the casting choice during film promos as well.
In an interview with Indian Express, Abhishek argued, “We went through many avenues and there was a thought about casting a trans person but you know I find everyone is so fascinated just by actors. Why is it that everything is legitimised by an actor? Why can’t a trans person write the film? Why can’t a trans person direct the film? First of all, this fascination is incorrect. Films are not made by actors, they are made by filmmakers and writers. Eventually, there is a representation by an individual actor but I try to see above this because there is a story to be told. You have to reach out to people at large by taking the story to them and I thought this is the best way to take this story there. When you talk to someone, you have to talk to them in their language.”
Even Sharad Kelkar was targeted for playing the role of a transgender in Laxmii.
