Director Sukumar’s Pushpa starring Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna has turned out to be the biggest box office success of the year 2021 in India beating the likes of Bollywood hit Sooryvanshi and the Hollywood mega-blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Ever since its OTT release on January 7, the film has found further acclaim and appreciation from a lot of celebs as well. Pushpa is without a doubt an entertaining spectacle and deserves all the accolades coming towards its way and I too enjoyed almost every bit of it.
The operative word here is “almost”.
One aspect of the film that made me uncomfortable while watching was its misogyny, objectification of women and the problematic romantic track.
    © Mythri Movie Makers
    Mild Spoilers Ahead…

There is a whole sidetrack in Pushpa about the lead character’s love life. When Pushpa (Allu Arjun) sees Srivalli (Rashmika Mandanna) for the first time, he instantly falls in love with her.
What he does next is stalking, lots and lots of stalking.
He follows her everywhere in hope that she notices him. When that doesn’t happen, his friend pays her friends a thousand bucks and in return asks her to look at him and smile.
    Reluctantly, she agrees.

Later, when Pushpa realises that she noticed him and smiled only because she was paid to do so, he gets angry. But then asks his friend to offer Rs 5000 in return for a kiss.

The next scene was a bit difficult for me to watch.
Shockingly, Srivalli agrees to the kiss, although supposedly under pressure. While their friends wait outside on the bridge, the two lead characters get into a car to share a kiss. When Srivalli is unable to kiss Pushpa and starts crying saying she will kiss only her husband, he gets angry and talks about the 5K rupees that he paid her for it.
    © Mythri Movie Makers
The problem doesn’t stop here. Since Srivalli had mentioned that she will only kiss her husband, Pushpa approaches her father for marriage without once consulting the girl herself.

When the two families meet, she is clearly uncomfortable and unhappy. Also, twice in the film, Pushpa teases her by showing cardamom in his mouth so that when they kiss he has fresh breath.
Later, in the narrative when a guy forces Srivalli to sleep with him and in return he will spare her father’s life, she heads to Pushpa’s house and requests him to sleep with her saying she always liked him and was ready for the marriage as well which couldn’t happen for other reasons.
The point to be noted here is there is not a single scene before this sequence that shows any liking on the girl’s part towards the guy. It is just assumed that she fell in love with him through the course of his stalking.
For a film that is so strong on emotions and entertainment, the romantic track is its weakest link. Like many masala entertainers, this film too promotes stalking as romance.

Now, the argument could be that the characters are based in the heartland and that Pushpa is a 'rowdy' fellow, that’s how they behave. But at a time when crimes against women are on the rise and films often influence the public, makers should’ve treated the romantic track a bit with caution and sensitivity.

Even after all these years, our films are refusing to move past “ladki ki na mein hi haan hai” and “stalk her till she reciprocates your love”.
Surprisingly, barring a few stray comments in reviews, articles and social media mentioning the misogyny in the film, not many seem to have a problem with it.
A social media user rightfully pointed out, “On a sad note, couldn't see critics, film lovers, feminists, to call out #Pushpa for its misogynist and sexist tones. Even though the setup is in a remote area, seeing such misogyny in 2021, isn't good.  #Arjunreddy and #KabirSingh received backlash but #Pushpa escaped that. Why?”

Another one said, “#Pushpa movie lo @alluarjun Acting adurs. First movie nunchi ippatidaaka Bunny grow ainattu naaku telisi inkevvaru avvaledu. But I absolutely hated the Misogyny & Women Objectification in Rashmika's character & Samantha's Song, Ghoram asalu. Eppatiki baagupadtundo mana industry.”

    On the other hand!

Absolute silence about the blatant misogyny in Pushpa from those who called Sarpatta Parambarai a misogynistic, toxic masculinity ridden shit fest!
    — deivenki (@catchvp) December 21, 2021
Having said that, Samantha’s dance number Oo Antava Oo Oo Antava did receive some criticism for its sexist lyrics from a section of the audience.
Recently, when Nagarjuna was asked about allegations of sexism and “promoting stalking as romance” in Telugu cinema, he defended it saying that it’s a case of “lost in translation” and only a few movies are guilty of actually being sexist.
I only partially agree with him as in the case of Pushpa, the execution of the romantic track itself is the problem and it has nothing to do with the translation. Also, for a huge film like Pushpa, it is imperative that the makers take a moral high ground when it comes to how a woman is portrayed in a film. It’s high time.

To reiterate, Pushpa deserves all the success coming its way, but it is also important to point out the things that are wrong with the film.

You know how we watch certain shows and movies, and then as our mind wonders what that movie would be like had someone else done it, we run a complete blank?
Sometimes, because we can’t think of anyone else donning a particular role and other times because even if someone did, they wouldn't be half as good as the actor who already did it.
And that's something I felt for the cast of the movie Shershaah, the blockbuster hit that was released last year and based on the life and journey of Captain Vikram Batra.
    © Dharma Productions
Actors Sidharth Malhotra and actress Kiara Advani essayed the role of Captain Vikram Batra and Dimple Cheema respectively and safe to say, they did a wonderful job.

Not only were they convincing in the skin of the two characters, but their acting left an imprint on our hearts, one that was pretty hard to challenge when we found out that Kiara Advani wasn’t the first choice for the film.
    © Dharma Productions
Turns out, the role of Captain Vikram Batra’s lady love, Dimple Cheema was first offered to Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt.

The Kalank actress who has done movies like Raazi was offered the role in Captain Vikram Batra’s biopic, however, allegedly refused to take it on due to her packed schedules and date issues.
Alia Bhatt hasn’t commented on how true the statement is but was all praise for the movie when it was released.
    © Alia Bhatt
She had posted, “Must must must watch! This film has made me laugh and cry and everything more. Sidharth Malhotra, you were too special yaa! So, so moving. And Kiara Advani my beautiful, you really just shine right through. Congratulations to the whole team and entire cast. Such a lovely film.”

Whether or not she was offered the film, we do wonder how the film would fare had she been playing the role. After all, Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra’s on-screen chemistry was always adored.

On the work front, Alia Bhatt would be seen next in SS Rajamouli’s RRR alongside Ram Charan and Jr NTR and will also have her movie Brahmastra hitting the screens this year.

Whenever the captain of the Indian Test cricket team, Virat Kohli steps onto the field, his fans and critics go through every minute detail about him. From the way he walks to the colour of his undershirt, literally everything about the Indian batter remains up for debate practically all the time.
During the first inning of the third and final Test match between India and South Africa, the skipper returned to the Playing XI after being ruled out of the second Test due to a severe upper back spasm and the Men in Blue ended up losing the match.

As soon as fans saw him on the pitch, they noticed that the man was wearing a red-coloured t-shirt inside his white Test cricket jersey. It did not take them long to turn on their inner detectives and start speculating the various reasons why Kohli would have worn it in the first place.

From calling it his lucky shirt to speculating that it might be a Royal Challengers Bangalore jersey, fans were putting in way too much of their time talking about the shirt’s colour. There were even people speculating if Kohli wore it because red is the favourite colour of his daughter, Vamika, who turned one year old on Tuesday.

    — Vishal (@_stay_safe_) January 11, 2022There were also the kind of people who thought that the whole investigation into Kohli and his red shirt was as senseless as his fans would ever get. Even then, they found it important enough to comment on the thread, just to let them know how “jobless” they were… See the irony?
Bc do you guys point out every little thing about him?

    — Imaad Adhikari (@mr_addy010) January 11, 2022On Day 1 of the third Test, Kohli started off his inning at an extremely slow pace. Hitting 12 fours and a six during his time in the middle, he took 158 deliveries to hit his half-century in Cape Town, making it his second-slowest half-ton in the longest format of the game.
After delivering 201 balls, the South African bowlers finally managed to dismiss Kohli for a well-earned 79-run inning which enabled the Indian side to put up a total of 223 on the board. Other than Kohli, no other Indian player managed to score more than 43 runs (Cheteshwar Pujara).
So, maybe the red shirt is lucky after all and the captain mustn’t remove it for the four days left. Maybe it will help the Indian side pick their first Test series win in South Africa as well? Well, let's wait and watch.

The ongoing Test series between India and South Africa has been an eye-opener for the touring side. Considered to be way superior as compared to their opponents, the Men in Blue were in for a surprise in the second Test when the Proteas showed true grit, won the match and tied the series 1-1.
One of the biggest talking points out of Test 2 at the Wanderers cricket ground was the Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant’s ability to bat under pressure and how easily he was enraged by the South Africans into playing one of the silliest shots in the longest format of the game and giving up his wicket for cheap.

Many even believe that it was Pant’s wicket in the second innings that became the turning point of the match and that if the young southpaw had somehow managed to keep his cool and played a decent knock, India could have won the game and therefore their first-ever Test series victory on South African soil.

Obviously, Pant’s childish gameplay made the head coach of the Indian cricket team and a Test cricket veteran, Rahul Dravid rather unhappy. Dravid said that the team management will have a “conversation” with the Roorkee-born about his technique at the pitch.

On this occasion, the former Australian cricketer, Brad Hogg has shown his hesitance with the idea of the Indian team management and even Dravid getting Pant all worried about his technique when that is not the real problem that he is struggling with at the moment.
Taking Pant’s incredible series-winning inning at the Gabba early last year as a case in point, Hogg suggested that the batter had the technique and has also proven to be able to deliver a great knock under pressure. According to the Aussie, the real problem has to do with his psychology and his weakness comes from acting on impulse.
“He’s entertaining but very frustrating to watch - either making a big score or having a brain fade and getting out early which he did in the Johannesburg Test when the team really needed him to lift. Now, we know that he has a reasonable technique… he can play under pressure. He did it in Australia at the Gabba. But in South Africa, he was put under the pump. He walked out of the crease, which tells you that he is a little bit twitchy. He was receiving a few verbals, you could see there was a bit of eagerness. It wasn’t the Rishabh Pant that we know,” Hogg said on his official YouTube channel.
    View this post on Instagram
“Rahul Dravid has come out and said that he’s going to have a word about shot selection with him. I don’t think he needs to do that - technique or tactics. Stay away from that because we know he’s got the goods to deliver. It’s more psychological. Was he in a positive or a negative frame of mind. Did the verbals get to him? Those are the things you should be looking at. When he’s on song, I guarantee you that he’s in a different state of mind. This innings he was in a negative state of mind,” explained Hogg.
Pant practically proved Hogg’s point while playing his first inning of the third and final Test of the India-South Africa series in Cape Town when he started his knock with a lot of aggression but quickly fizzled out and tossed a catch into the hands of Keegan Petersen in the 61st over and walked back to the pavilion for just 27 runs.

Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, featuring Allu Arjun and Pooja Hegde in lead roles, was released in 2020 and turned out to be a huge blockbuster at the box office. Now, the official Hindi remake of the Telugu film is in the making. Dishoom and Desi Boyz fame Rohit Dhawan is directing the Hindi remake titled Shehzada. Featuring Katrik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon in lead roles, Shehzada is among the most-anticipated movies of 2022.

While the remake is expected to hit the big screens in the second half of 2022, there are reports that the Hindi dubbing rights of Allu Arjun's hit film were sold to Manish Shah of Goldmines Telefilms who wasn't happy with the announcement of its Hindi remake. According to reports, he had bought the dubbing rights in 2020 for Rs 4 crore.

Revealing the same, a source told Bollywood Hungama that Goldmines Telefilms was all set to bring the Hindi dubbed version of Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo on TV and OTT. However, the dubbing giant got to know about the film's Hindi remake last year and put all the plans to bring the Hindi dubbed version to a halt. Since all the Hindi rights were with Shah, he was initially upset with the announcement of the official Hindi remake. Seeing the development, he finally decided to premiere the dubbed version on OTT as well as TV.
    View this post on Instagram
After hearing this, the makers of Shehzada contacted Shah and made an offer to not release the Hindi dubbed version of Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo.

"The producers of Shehzada felt that the Hindi premiere of Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo would take a major hit on the prospects of their film. So they got into a conversation with Manish Shah and requested him to hold back on the premiere. They also offered to make him the co-producer of the Hindi remake which he declined. Manish was insisting on going ahead with the premiere, but eventually, the Shehzada team shelled out an astronomical amount of Rs. 8 crores to stop Manish Shah's Goldmines Telefilms from premiering the film,” the source added.
Basically, Shah earned a profit of Rs 4 crore on his investment.

As per the new agreement, the Hindi dubbed version of Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo can be screened on OTT platforms and TV 16 weeks after the release of Shehzada in theatres. However, the makers of Kartik-Kriti's upcoming film are yet to confirm the same.

India captain Virat Kohli answered his critics in style by showing his mental toughness and fought hard for his side on the opening day of the third Test against South Africa that went in the favour of the hosts.
Kohli scored 79 runs but his restraint of not going after wide deliveries is what stood out for most of us, especially after seeing him get out in a similar fashion in recent times.

After his half-century against the Proteas, Kohli must be feeling like he is back to his best. However, if you are also thinking like that, a former India batter does not agree with you.

Sanjay Manjrekar, during his analysis of Kohli's knock, said that while he wants to tip his hat to Kohli for showing great determination and temperament, he is not happy with the approach the Indian captain has opted for in Test cricket.
    Virat Kohli is caught behind

The wait for his first century since November 2019 goes on – Rabada snares the big wicket, and the India captain walks back for 79.

Manjrekar said Kohli of the old had all the shots in the book and could have easily managed to score over 100 runs after facing the number of balls that he faced in Cape Town on Tuesday.
“Kohli has other shots as well. We are saying he ran out of partners and hence missed a hundred. But the Virat Kohli of old, with all the shots that he used to play, would have got a 130 in the same number of balls," Manjrekar said while speaking on ESPN Cricinfo.
The former India batter said Kohli has started to rely on his front foot while looking to score boundaries and has lost all the shots great batters have in their arsenal.
"He's now become a batter who wants to be on the front foot all the time and his one boundary scoring shot is the front foot drive. So, he has actually stopped playing all the other shots that all the top class batters usually plays. Where is the back foot punch, glide down to the third man, nudge off the back foot for a single? He is just committing himself to this technique," he added.
Manjrekar also mentioned that head coach Rahul Dravid should sit with Kohli and ask him to look at his earlier knocks and how he used to play with the field and score freely.
Whether you agree with Manjrekar's views or not, you cannot deny the fact that we have seen Kohli bat with the tail and score hundreds and that approach was clearly missing on the day.

Let's hope that with runs under his belt, Kohli can come out in the second innings and end his century drought and once again starts to dominate world cricket.

Bollywood is a land of Hindi films, which means the one thing that is guaranteed in it, is a whole lot of drama.

Whether these are dating rumours, fights, scandals, marriages, or parties, everything gets discussed in detail, as it's something that involves the personal lives of big stars.
Now, when one talks about the industry, it appears that there are tiers in the industry, meaning that there are several levels at which actors and actresses operate.
There are newcomers, stars who've worked in the industry for a few years, and then there are Bollywood superstars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, and others who take the top stop in the industry.
    © BCCL
The higher the level, the bigger the controversy around the basics of things.

An example of it is fights and arguments, which usually happen in almost every industry.
While there are not a lot of tiffs of the magnitude that Shah Rukh and Salman Khan had, there are still other cold wars that haven't quite got that kind of attention.
We're talking about the one between Salman and Saif Ali Khan.
    © BCCL
The two actors were once very close to each other, having worked in the classic Bollywood film Hum Saath-Saath Hain, which was directed by Sooraj Barjatya.

    © Netflix
However, things went down the road for them once upon a time, the details behind which are not yet known.

Shedding some light on that, Saif did reveal a few things in an old interview with IB Times.
“Over time, there have been some differences that have come up, which he and I best know about and that will always remain between him and me only. He is someone I have worked with, spent a lot of time with and he is someone I greatly admire as a brother. And that will never change.” said Saif.
Okay! That statement does leave a lot of things in mystery.
As per reports, some of the differences have been said to be because of the Black Buck case that involved both stars.
However, things took a turn for the better back in 2015 for the two when Salman actually went on to invite Saif for the special screening of Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which had Saif's wife Kareena Kapoor Khan in the lead role.
When asked whether Salman had invited Saif because of Kareena, Saif replied, “I hope not. Salman, I know, would not do anything just for the sake of it. I have known him longer than I have known Kareena. So I would hope that our equation is not dependent on her and I felt very nice about it. I have always had the highest respect and love for Salman. I hadn’t spoken to him for the longest time and was very happy to hear from him.”
As per reports, there are currently no tensions between the two actors who are both on good terms with each other.
Will we ever get to know what actually went down between them? Only time will tell.
The two are currently busy with their upcoming films, with Saif getting ready for the Vikram Vedha remake alongside Hrithik Roshan.
Salman, on the other hand, has Tiger 3 and Shah Rukh Khan's Pathan that is set to have shoot delays yet again.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu is the talk of the town right now, especially, for her special dance number in the latest Allu Arjun blockbuster Pushpa.
The film has been enjoying a glorious run at the box office, especially, in its dubbed Hindi version
A few months before Pushpa, Samantha was also seen playing an antagonist in the second season of Manoj Bajpayee’s hit show The Family Man. The show marked her first full-fledged role in the Hindi film industry.
    © Amazon Prime Video
However, neither Pushpa nor The Family Man was her first introduction to Hindi speaking audiences.

The official Bollywood introduction of Samantha came way back in 2012 with Gautham Vasudev Menon’s romantic drama Ekk Deewana Tha starring Prateik Babbar and Amy Jackson.
Ekk Deewana Tha was the official Hindi remake of Samantha’s own Ye Maaya Chesave, her Telugu film debut. It was also the first time she worked alongside her ex-husband Naga Chaitanya.
Just like the Hindi remake, the original film too was helmed by Gautham Vasudev Menon.

As a nod to her presence in the original Telugu film, Samantha did a special appearance in the Hindi remake.

In the film, she played the character of an assistant director named Samantha aka Sam who works alongside Prateik Babbar’s character and falls in love with him. However, he is unable to reciprocate her feelings as he is already in love with the character played by Amy Jackson.
Take a look at her scene from the film below:

This wasn’t all, Ye Maaya Chesave was also remade in Tamil as Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa starring Simbu and Trisha Krishnan. The Tamil remake too featured a special appearance by Samantha.

While the Telugu and Tamil versions of the film were a big success, the Hindi version flopped. However, the music by AR Rahman was a major hit in all the versions.
Years after doing a special appearance in a Hindi film, Samantha will now be making her full-fledged debut in a Bollywood film reportedly produced by Taapsee Pannu. Details about the film are yet to be revealed.
