In a few days, we all will finally bid goodbye to 2021. While in 2020, not much happened in the film industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic, things came back on track towards the end of 2021. Theatres finally reopened and films like Sooryavanshi and Spider-Man: No Way Home broke several records at the box office. Well, 2021 also witnessed various controversial events that left the film industry in shock.
From Aryan Khan's arrest to Kartik Aaryan's exit from Karan Johar-produced Dostana 2, let's take a look at some of the biggest controversies 2021 here:
Raj Kundra's arrest in porn case View this post on Instagram
Businessman Raj Kundra, the husband of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty Kundra, was arrested in July by Mumbai Police in an alleged porn case. As per various reports, Kundra was involved in publishing and creating pornographic content for various apps. Kundra was arrested after the police found his connection to Umesh Kamat, who belonged to a UK-based production house that used to upload such adult content. Later, a few actresses including Poonam Pandey and Sherlyn Chopra too revealed that Kundra had approached them for the adult content. After two months, in September, Raj was finally released on anticipatory bail.
Aryan Khan's arrest in drugs case View this post on Instagram
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in an alleged drugs case on October 2 from a Goa-based cruise. He was arrested along with seven others after a raid on the cruise. At that time, it was alleged that they were arrested for possessing banned drugs. Later, in his statement, Aryan had stated that he was not carrying any drugs and is being targeted as he belongs to a Bollywood family. His lawyer, Satish Maneshinde, also claimed that he was on the cruise as a friend invited him there for a party. After spending around three weeks in jail, Aryan finally was released on bail last month.
Kartik Aaryan's exit from Dostana 2 View this post on Instagram
Ever since its announcement, Dostana 2 was among the most-awaited films, however, Kartik's sudden exit came as a shock to everyone. It was supposed to star Kartik alongside Janhvi Kapoor and newbie Laksh in lead roles but the film has now been put on hold. Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, even after the completion of 50% of the film, announced Kartik's ouster from the sequel revealing that a recasting will be done. There were constant reports of Kartik's "unprofessionalism" being the reason behind his controversial exit. However, the makers as well as the actor chose to maintain a dignified silence and have moved on. While the latest reports state that Dostana 2 has been shelved, makers are yet to make an official announcement regarding the same. On the other hand, Kartik is busy shooting for Rohit Dhawan's Shehzada with Kriti Sanon in Delhi.
Kangana Ranaut’s war of words with Diljit Dosanjh during farmers protest View this post on Instagram
    View this post on Instagram
Earlier this year, in February, international singer Rihanna posted a tweet in support of the farmers' protest in India and asked why people "aren't talking about this"? Many social media users, including singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh, agreed with Rihanna which didn't go too well with Kangana Ranaut. Expressing her displeasure, Kangana called Rihanna a "fool" and took a dig at Diljit for supporting the protest. She even claimed that the Soorma actor disappeared after inciting farmers on social media. He fired back at the actress saying "have some shame".

There are many ways to show respect to someone you hold in high regard. It could be through a simple gesture, an appreciative remark or even a compliment for that matter.
But what definitely isn’t equivalent to showing respect to someone is passing a rather distasteful comment on their body and making a cringe-worthy analogy out of it.
Something that Maharashtra Minister Gulabrao Patil learned the hard way after he ended up comparing smooth roads to the cheek of Bollywood veteran and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Hema Malini.
    © Twitter
The incident occurred while the minister was addressing an election rally for Bodwad Nagar panchayat in the Jalgaon district on Sunday.

Comparing the roads in his constituency of Jalgaon district to actor-lawmaker Hema Malini's cheeks, Patil said, “My challenge is to the person who has been MLA for 30 years (Eknath Khadse) to come towards my house (in his constituency, Jalgaon district) If the roads are not like Hema Malini's cheek, then I will resign.''
Why he felt the need to pull up such an objectionable analogy, was beyond us and a lot of other internet users who called Patil out of his misconduct and crass remarks.

    — Anuj Maheshwari (@anujpm) December 20, 2021The comment instantly drew ire from political parties like the BJP and the NCP as well as a very strong reaction from the state women’s commission.
Defending his colleague’s statement, Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut said, "this type of comparison has happened earlier too. It's a respect for Hema Malini. So, don't see it negatively. Earlier, Lalu Yadav had also given a similar example. We respect Hema Malini."

MP Hema Malini reacted to the statement and admitted that the trend indeed was started by Lalu Yadav, and insisted on how it shouldn’t be used anymore.
She also said, “This wasn’t in good taste and women should not be talked about like this.”

Meanwhile, Twitter users had mixed reactions to the fiasco where some of them made fun of the Maharashtra Minister for making such a comparison, while others were glad that it wasn’t compared to ‘Uddhav Thackerey’s spine’.
A lot of people also slammed Patil for making such crass remarks over a woman and her body and called him out for objectifying women.

Both Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna are actors who have really become country-wide sensations.

While both have already made their mark in Telugu cinema, they are now being appreciated in the mainstream Hindi cinema as well, as they garner fans all across the country through their good looks and acting ability.
The two actors are of course now starring in the highly awaited film Pushpa: The Rise, which was just released in theatres recently.

And let's just say that the movie has done really well at the box office.

Pushpa: The Rise has already brought over Rs 100 crore at the box office worldwide in just two days of its release.
It certainly looks like that it's not going to stop anytime soon, with the film looking to rake in more such numbers in the next few days. However, despite the success, the film has been marred in some controversy, owing to a particular scene between leads Allu and Rashmika.
    © Mythri Movie Makers
As per reports, it is sort of an 'adult scene' between the lead pair that have left some viewers uncomfortable.

In the scene, Allu's character Pushpa Raj and Rashmika's character Srivalli can be seen sitting and romancing in a car.
It is when during the course of their conversation, Pushpa touches Srivalli's chest. This is what has not gone down well with the Telugu family audience.
As per reports, The scene was even discussed online by Allu Arjun’s fans, who said that the makers should cut out the bit, as it might make families uncomfortable while watching the movie.
Now, as per the demand of the fans, the makers of Pushpa have now decided to delete the scene, with the audience able to watch the trimmed movie from Monday in theatres.
Directed by Sukumar, Pushpa is based on the lives of red sandalwood smugglers in the Seshachalam forest of Andhra Pradesh.
The movie will be released in two parts, with the sequel titled Pushpa: The Rule, seeking a 2022 release.

Ahead of the Boxing Day Test against South Africa, the Indian team has already begun its preparations. After completing their one-day hard-quarantine, the players did a light workout and played an interesting ‘foot-volley’ game to get into the groove.
The next morning they began training in full flow and participated in their first nets session while on Sunday Virat Kohli and his men trained on the centre wicket for the first time under some really tough conditions.
    View this post on Instagram
If we look at the past records, South Africa has been one of the toughest places to tour for India’s red-ball squad. The Indian team has visited the Rainbow Nation seven times in the past but have never won a series.
In fact, it is the only major Test playing nation in the world where we are yet to clinch a series in the game’s longest format. No matter how strong of a squad we take to their shores, the end result has always been the same.
However, things are different this time around, at least that’s what Cheteshwar Pujara thinks. The middle-order batter believes that this is the our best chance to win a Test series in South Africa and end this over two-decade old drought.
    View this post on Instagram
When asked about what makes this side different from the other squads that failed in the past, the Saurashtra batter said “Our fast bowlers are our strength” and hoped they would deliver the goods like they did in Australia and England in the last one year.
“Our fast bowlers have been the difference between the two sides whenever we have played abroad. If you look at the Australia series, even if you look at the England series, we have done exceptionally well as a bowling unit and I am sure that will be the case even in South Africa. Our fast bowlers are our strength and I hope that they will be able to utilise these conditions and give us 20 wickets in every Test match,” Pujara was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
    © Reuters
“I am sure there is enough time for us to prepare and guys are looking forward to this series. This is the best opportunity for us to win our first series in South Africa. So all of us are looking forward to it,” he added.

Being confident is great but there is a thin line between confidence and overconfidence and some fans felt that by giving such a statement Pujara showed that he was drifting towards the latter.
    View this post on Instagram
Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje are two of the leading fast bowlers in world cricket and scoring runs against them wouldn’t be easy for India’s already fragile middle-order.
Just like Pujara, there were many who were confident that the team would do well this time around but unlike him they were treading with caution as they didn’t want to ‘jinx’ anything. Some of these fans even urged Pujara to keep his mouth shut and told him to focus on his batting instead.
Any team tend to perform better when there is less expectation, hence less pressure. For ex, India played 1983 WC, 2007 T20 WC, 2021 BG Trophy as underdog & won all of them. Players should refrain themselves from putting such statements as it will create pressure on them only.
    — Apoorv (@aalisswell) December 19, 2021Might be your last series too if you don't perform this time
    — Arn8v (@Arnav_45) December 19, 2021The form of Indian Middle-order would definitely make it more competitive as bowlers are good enough to win.
    — movieman (@movieman777) December 19, 2021Overconfidence
    — Indian RP17™ (@BCCI_Indian) December 19, 2021Don't underestimate African Bowlers
    — Milind Madhav (@Madhav__Milind) December 19, 2021Pehle batting to kr lo
    — Rohan Kumar (@Rohancosine) December 19, 2021Bas puji chup ho ja
    — Aryan (@runmachine_18) December 19, 2021There’s no doubt Indian fast bowlers have been exceptional in the last couple of years and have played a key role in winning Test matches in both Australia and England. But as much as picking 20 wickets is important, scoring runs is equally important.
To allow the bowlers to pick 20 wickets, the batters just first put a healthy score on the board only then they can expect the quicks to weave their magic.
    © Reuters
But unfortunately, India’s batting has been below average for quite some time. Even in England, the victories wouldn’t have been possible had the lower order batters not contributed with the bat.

Kohli, Pujara and Rahane, three most-experienced batters in the Indian batting line-up, are going through a lean patch at the moment and unless they fire, no matter how well the bowling group performs they won’t be able to win the series.

John Abraham is an actor who has done almost all kinds of films over the course of his 2-decade-old Bollywood career.

Having worked tirelessly in the industry, he's come from almost no backing to achieve tremendous success, wherein now, he also has a production house of his own, where he makes the movies he actually likes.

A good formula for success, oh yes!

However, you have to think that in his long career, things obviously mustn't always have been rosy for him, which he too admits.
In one of his old interviews, John can be heard speaking about nepotism, actors, and camps within Bollywood.
Speaking in an old interview on Rendezvous With Simi Garewal, John talks about how people literally wanted to take his roles.
“I have just started learning about lobbies and camps when other people have asked for the same role as I have been offered. There have been family pressures, peer pressures, father pressures, and mother pressures. But I feel very complimented that someone wants to do a role that I am doing,” he said.
John also reveals how he had to tread carefully in the industry as there was no helping hand waiting for him, in case he made a mistake.
“Well, till now I have tried to be very careful because I don’t have any backing. If I fall, there’s no one to really hold my hand. So, I have to stand up there myself and I realize that. And I think I am doing a pretty good job and hanging in there. I think I have created a niche for myself. I have been told that if everybody is dal and chawal, I am caviar. I felt wow but I realised that it meant that you are not gonna get as many roles as the others.” said John.

Talking about making friends in the industry, John revealed how he's found some co-stars to be insecure as well.

“I think it is very easy and you can have very good friends if you are secure but most of them are not. That’s a problem,” John told Simi in response to her question if it is easy for him to make his co-stars his friends.
“What they don’t understand is that I see it. I see insecurity very easily and I know it when I see it. And I feel helpless and I just want to reach out and tell them that listen, don’t worry about me. I am just doing my work. You do yours. Why fear when John is here,” John said.
John, of course, is going to be seen in his latest film Attack alongside Jacqueline Fernandez, and in Pathan alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.

For quite some time now, Jacqueline Fernandez is making headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Ever since her cosy and intimate pictures with conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar went viral, Jacqueline has come under public scrutiny.
While the conman is already in custody for allegedly extorting Rs 200 crore from a businessman’s wife, recently, Enforcement Directorate (ED) interrogated Jacqueline as well as actress Nora Fatehi for alleged connections with him. A few weeks back Jacqueline was also stopped from flying out of India.

Now, a recent report has claimed that besides giving her expensive gifts, Sukesh had also promised Jacqueline that he will produce a mega-budget superhero trilogy starring her in the lead. The female superhero-led trilogy was said to be of Rs 500 crore budget.

An insider told India Today, “Sukesh knew very well that Jacqueline was looking for work in Bollywood. She wasn’t signing too many films and he used her vulnerability to woo her even more. In one such conversation, he promised her that he would produce India’s first woman superhero project with her that would involve Hollywood VFX artists, and it will be shot on a global scale. He told Jacqueline that she resembled Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie and she deserved a superhero series made around her.”

The insider also added that while Jacqueline didn’t take Sukesh’s word at face value, she was still partially convinced that he meant business.

He left no stones unturned to lure Jacqueline and even did his homework about how the budget of a film is set in Bollywood and even dropped names of big producers in the Hindi film industry.
Recently, Jacqueline was asked by ED to submit her bank statements from April 2020 till date. During the interrogation, she had told ED that Sukesh had arranged for a private jet for her to fly to Chennai and that she received, “limited edition perfumes and Veen alkaline water bottles every week.”

Besides this, she was also gifted two pairs of diamond earrings, two Hermes bracelets, three designer bags from Gucci and Chanel, two Gucci outfits for gym wear, a pair of Louis Vuitton shoes and a Mini Cooper. She also said that she later returned the car.
