Being a politician isn’t easy and comes with a lot of expectations and responsibilities from the citizens they vow to serve. Since politicians are the public figures for people who are expected to address their problems, they often find themselves on the receiving end of the wrath and anger of the public if they fail to do so. It has happened many times that politicians are hurled abuses at, thrown shoes at and even physically assaulted in public places.Β

Even the biggest and leading politicians have been attacked and assaulted by their own public multiple times including Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal who was slapped and the then PM of India, Dr Manmohan Singh who was almost hit by a shoe flung on him.

Here are six such incidents where Indian politicians were attacked and assaulted by the public, in public.Β

    1. Arvind Kejriwal (2019)Β
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has been attacked in public not once but several times. He was slapped by a person during a roadshow in 2019 when a man in a red shirt climbed on the minister’s jeeb and hit him in front of everyone.Β  Β  Β
    2. Jagan Mohan Reddy (2018)
The YSR Congress leader Jagan Mohan Reddy, before he became the CM of Andhra Pradesh,Β  was stabbed in the arm (yes, you read that right) at Vizag Airport by a fan who was taking a selfie with him.Β
    3. Dr Manmohan Singh (2009)
The then Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh nearly escaped a shoe attack as the target fell short and couldn’t hit him. It happened when a student from the crowd flung a shoe at him during an election rally in Ahmedabad.
    4. P Chidambaram (2009)
P Chidambaram was serving as the Union Home Minister in April 2009 when a journalist threw a shoe at him at a press conference. He did it in protest against CBI’s clean chit to Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in the 1984 Sikh riots case.Β
    5. Sharad Pawar (2011)
The NCP Chief Sharad Pawar was the Agriculture Minister in the Congress-led UPA government when he was slapped while exiting the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) headquarters.Β
    6. Rahul Gandhi (2016)
Another shoe attack was when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was targeted during a roadshow in Uttar Pradesh because the attacker was upset with Gandhi for carrying on with the rallies and not paying tribute to the martyrs of Uri attack.Β

With two out of the last three days of the one-off World Test Championship final completely ruined by rain and bad light, former cricketers from India and New Zealand had a thing or two to say to the International Cricket Council (ICC) for their planning.Β
VVS Laxman, and Shane Bond have reacted openly, showing their disappointment in the global body for not having the foresight to predict the tricky England weather, especially in June when it is known to rain in the country.
Update: Play on Day 4 abandoned due to rain. We thank our fans who turned up and kept the tempo high. See you again, tomorrow. #TeamIndia #WTC21 pic.twitter.com/0OpqZ0hGd5

Β Talking about having just one Reserve Day as a backup option, Laxman criticised the ICC for not deviating from tradition and maybe book two or more days in advance, just in case a situation like this would have occurred.Β Β
β€œIt’s very sad for the fans. I think ICC did not get the rules right. All said and done, you want a champion,” Laxman said on Star Sports. β€œWith so much time available, I’m sure they could have at least allowed 90 overs in 5 days to complete 450 overs. That’s something I would have expected from ICC. We were excited that there is a reserve day but I’m not sure whether the game can finish (even with the reserve day) if the rain continues.”

New Zealand legend Shane Bond gave a more result-oriented criticism in which he spoke about how the circumstances have unfairly turned the game towards a draw or a win by the Black Caps.
β€œBoth teams want to play to win. The other thing is that the pitch is offering so much to the bowlers that even if you have three-four days of play, we could find a result. If the weather delays go on for long, sometimes it means only one team can win if New Zealand bat well after the rain finishes, it puts them in the best position but I’m with VVS, however long it takes, I’d like to see 450 overs and one team come out on top,” Bond said.
    It's been that kind of a day ️️#WTC21 pic.twitter.com/1PUaUbcddQ

As for Day 4 of the final, the weather seems to be a bit more forgiving as compared to Monday. However, with 99% cloud cover for almost the entire day and rain predictions between 7-8 AM and between 1 and 4 PM (BST) delays are expected once again.
