When it comes to the Indian Premier League , virtually no other cricketer enjoys the kind of fame and admiration Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni  does. Even after his retirement, even after he stands at the cusp of turning 40, the hope joined to his name remained unprecedented.
And regardless of how big Dhoni’s fan-following may be, there is one man who has earned the title of being his superfan after showing over a decade’s worth of unconditional support towards the former Indian skipper and his CSK franchise - Saravanan Hari.

In an interview with MensXP, Saravanan relives his early days as just another fan covered in yellow colour, his the kind of love he got from the people of Tamil Nadu and his thoughts of Dhoni’s future in the IPL.
Take us through the steps that you’d take every time you paint yourself yellow.
“Well, it seems like it was long long ago that I used to paint my entire body yellow. I have adapted to the changing times and have started using a yellow bodycon suit instead of paint, but I can still take you through the entire process.”
“Painting myself yellow was a tiring process, that took 4 hours to be completed. It was a two-person job that consisted of painting multiple layers of yellow colour on my entire upper body, including my face. Every time we sat down to paint my body, each coating took around 30 mins and each coating took 15 mins to dry. I used to apply around three to four coatings.”
What was going through your mind when you got ready as the Superfan avatar for the very first time?

“In my head, it was never a superfan avatar, it was an earnest attempt at showing my support to my favourite team. It’s the people who have given me the title of a superfan. I honestly think I am a representative of the common fan.”
“Talking about my first time as a superfan, I still remember the time I was discussing with my friends to visit Chepauk covered in yellow paint. I cheered for CSK from the stands when the cameraman moved his camera towards me and the next thing I know is – I start getting calls from media. I think the media has been supportive in telling my story to the world.”
What would you like to say about the CSK fans who recognised your love for the franchise and accepted you to be their leader?

“The people of Tamil Nadu are in general welcoming in nature and the same is with the CSK fans. We have been accepting players from all around the world. Players like MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Shane Watson and Dwayne Bravo are prime examples of this. So, looking at my love for CSK and the kind of efforts I put to support my team were naturally recognised by fans. And I think this is how they have chosen a person to be their voice.”
Do the expectations of always being in a hyped-up mood during the matches get overwhelming?

“I am a person who eats, drinks, sleeps CSK every time. I am a person who is in a hyped-up mood whenever CSK is playing, especially when Thala (Dhoni) plays. So, I don’t think people will have any sort of expectations from me. However, I get overwhelmed when other fans join me in my cheers and reciprocate my hyped-up mood.”
“I love my family; they are my biggest pillar of support. Whenever I am feeling a bit low I reach out to my family and they help me uplift my mood. I also get power from Dhoni Anna’s struggle. Whenever I’m in doubt, I try to think how he would’ve tackled a certain situation on the field.”
Ever since last year, many Indian cricket fans have been saying that MS Dhoni is not the same player who brought three championships to the franchise. How does that make you feel?

“I think Dhoni Anna has the power to hit all the criticism out of the boundary line and he will prove this by winning the cup in 2021. He has grown wiser and there’s no other cricketing mind that can strategize like him.”
“Under his guidance, Team Indian has got three ICC trophies, and I think he will aim and achieve to get CSK its 4th IPL trophy this year. Dhoni Anna along with CSK management is looking at a renewed team experience, and this change will reflect during the tournament.”
Many cricket experts believe that IPL 2021 will be the final season for Dhoni. What do you think about that?
“I think Dhoni Anna has a couple of more years before he steps down as the captain. He will break Rohit Sharma’s record and win more trophies than MI. I hope he stays for longer, with the great mind that he has, one can never predict his next move.”
When Dhoni does retire, would you still want to come to CSK games?
Of course! CSK is my home team and Dhoni Anna will never leave CSK. He will be a part of the team in all capacities. I will support CSK, irrespective of anything because it's Anna’s team.
What is your IPL Mantra for CSK?

“CSK is a powerhouse with the best of cricketers, and the team is led by Thala – they need to step into the season with confidence and win right from the first match and the end goal should be reaching the Top 2.”
