We may pay a nominal amount for a ticket at the theatre, or now with Covid in full swing, an annual price for a subscription at the OTT platforms, but moviemakers, on the other hand, besides just putting their heart and soul into making a movie, also put in a lot of money.

We are talking about millions that are invested into making a movie, from paying the crew, getting a movie set up and running to bearing the cost for literally everything along the way. 

And while most filmmakers are able to manage all that on top of the fees paid to the actors, Director Madhur Bhandarkar particularly found funding an actress’s wardrobe for a role - more expensive than an entire budget set apart for a film!

We are talking about the time Madhur Bhandarkar told a leading daily about how Kareena Kapoor’s clothes in the film Heroine cost more than the budget he set aside for his first movie - Chandni Bar.

While talking about his debut film, Madhur had shared, "When I approached producers for it, they wanted me to put some item numbers in the film, which I didn’t want to. My first film did not work, so there was a lot of pressure on me, but I was hell-bent on making the film the way I wanted to. I made the movie on a very small budget. So much so, that I once jokingly told Kareena that I had made Chandni Bar on a budget that was smaller than what I spent on her clothes in Heroine (laughs).”

Back in 2012, the filmmaker had even tweeted about the same around the release of Heroine, where he wrote, “I made Chandni Bar in 2001 with 1.5 crores which today, a decade later, is #Heroine’s costume budget for Kareena! How times have changed!”

And thinking back to the looks that Kareena donned in this intense drama film, there were quite a few extravagant ones indeed! However, Heroine fizzled out at the Box Office upon release.
