The Amar Jawan Jyoti, also known as the ‘eternal flame’, was lit in 1972 after the 1971 war, at the India Gate, to honour the soldiers who laid their lives during the 1971 India-Pakistan war.
It was inaugurated by the then prime minister, Indira Gandhi, on January 26, 1972, and from then to now, had been lit for 50 long years.
After 50 years , The Eternal Flame , Amar Jawan Jyoti At India Gate Will be Extinguished Tomorrow.

Hailed as a symbol of strength, courage and a true and immortal soldier, the Amar Jawan Jyoti has always been able to extract the true patriotic emotion of every Indian. Perhaps, that is why, when news about it being reportedly 'extinguished' made rounds on the internet, it sparked a big row.
The centre had recently made a decision to merge the eternal flame of the Amar Jawan Jyoti with the National War Memorial on Friday. A decision that enraged a lot of people, including leaders from the opposition.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi posted on the matter saying, “It is a matter of great sadness that the immortal flame that used to burn for our brave soldiers will be extinguished today. Some people cannot understand patriotism and sacrifice – never mind… We will once again light the Amar Jawan Jyoti for our soldiers!”
This government has no respect for democratic tradition & established convention, whether in parliament or out of it. The sanctity acquired after fifty years of the Amar Jawan Jyoti is being lightly snuffed out:https://t.co/d918XjfntF So everything must be reinvented post-2014?!

And supporting the claim was Congress MP Shashi Tharoor who said, “This government has no respect for democratic tradition & established convention, whether in parliament or out of it. The sanctity acquired after fifty years of the Amar Jawan Jyoti is being lightly snuffed out… So everything must be reinvented post-2014?!”
Constructed as a memorial for Indian soldiers, who were martyred in action in the 1971 war, the Amar Jawan Jyoti flame, which has been burning for 50 years, will be extinguished today.

Was it really needed? Amar Jawan Jyoti has a special emotional connect with a generation of Indians https://t.co/2VfwD4SoLo
— Vipin Vijayan (@Vipin_Vijayan_) January 20, 2022As a former IAF fighter pilot, felt sad to read about the 50 year flame at India gate, in honour of the martyrs of 1971 war being extinguished.
Highly inappropriate! Most countries have several war memorials!! No need to extinguish existing Amar Jawan Jyoti!!#AmarJawanJyoti pic.twitter.com/C379FkY2Ol
Meanwhile, people on Twitter also showed their resentment towards this decision as they wrote comments like, “Was it really needed? Amar Jawan Jyoti has a special emotional connect with a generation of Indians.” In fact, people on Twitter are calling today a ‘dark day’ in history.

— ANI (@ANI) January 21, 2022On the other hand, the Government claims that a lot was lost in translation, for the flame was never to be ‘extinguished’, but just ‘merged’.

There is a lot of misinformation circulating regarding the flame of the Amar Jawan Jyoti.
Here is the correct perspective:
The flame of the Amar Jawan Jyoti is not being extinguished. It is being merged with the flame at the National War Memorial. 1/n pic.twitter.com/7ZGSCZeZP8
People who have never even paused to read about the sacrifices of our soldiers and can’t name 2 PVCs are crying over relocating of Amar Jawan Jyoti like they were personally invested in it. If you really want to pay respects, walking next door to War memorial is hardly an issue.
— Maj Manik M Jolly,SM (@Manik_M_Jolly) January 21, 2022Retd General Ashok Mehta said while speaking to The Indian Express, “The Congress will obviously oppose (the decision) because the Amar Jawan Jyoti came up during their time. But with the War Memorial now in place, it does not make sense to have two separate flames to commemorate soldiers. It is the right choice to merge the flames and have only one place for it. The (BJP) government has taken a political call to see it (Amar Jawan Jyoti) as a colonial structure, otherwise they could have built a memorial around it as well.”
It is ironic that people who did not make a National War Memorial for 7 decades are now making a hue and cry when a permanent and fitting tribute is being made to our martyrs#AmarJawanJyoti
— Vikas Bhadauria (@vikasbha) January 21, 2022#WATCH| "There should be no politics on the merger of Amar Jawan Jyoti & National War Memorial. It has become a trend to give a political angle to every initiative done by the Centre: 1971 war veteran and former Army Dy Chief Lt Gen JBS Yadava (Retd) pic.twitter.com/G2hlorvVfB
— ANI (@ANI) January 21, 2022Those who support the stance on Twitter are saying things like, “It is ironic that people who did not make a National War Memorial for 7 decades are now making a hue and cry when a permanent and fitting tribute is being made to our martyrs.”
A needless controversey is being created.
The flame of Amar Jawan Jyoti is being merged with that of National War Memorial;it is not being extinguished.
NWM is the designated war memorial at National level to pay homage all Indias Bravehearts, past present or future.

Another user also commented, “People who have never even paused to read about the sacrifices of our soldiers and can’t name 2 PVCs are crying over relocating of Amar Jawan Jyoti like they were personally invested in it. If you really want to pay respects, walking next door to War memorial is hardly an issue.”
The National War Memorial, which was built by the NDA Government in the India Gate complex and was inaugurated in 2019, has the names of all the Indian defence personnel who lost their lives in the many operations; from the 1947-48 Indo-Pak war to the recent Galwan valley clash with Chinese troops. Names of many other bravehearts who also lost lives in counter-terrorist operations are also included in the memorial.
