‘Darpok Captain!’ Fans Slam ‘Nervous’ Rohit Sharma For Doubting India Despite Easy Schedule

Becoming the captain of the Indian cricket team is a tricky business. If you lie and get caught, you are up for some major social media judgement and a lifetime of trolling and criticism, whereas if you become completely honest about your views on the current situation of the squad, you can be called insecure, incertain and incompetent, even though you really have gotten the chance to prove yourself.

For Rohit Sharma, the newly crowned white-ball captain of the Men in Blue, his honesty about the probable future of the team has already exposed him in some kind of social media judgements even before he got to captain the side in the first of three ODI matches against the touring West Indies team.

Ahead of the first ODI at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Sharma confessed that there might be a possibility that during his initial days as the Indian captain, the team would continue to lose a few more series.

Rohit Sharma (on the possibility of getting Test captaincy) said,"There's time for that. My focus is on limited overs cricket. Workload management is important. We could lose a few series because we need to keep changing players, but we're ready for that.#RohitSharma | #INDvWI pic.twitter.com/jgdI5QiiJU

The reason ‘Hitman’ gave for such a thought process was that the squad was still experimenting with the final roster, and there is a “need” to continuously change the players in the team either willingly or unwillingly (for instance because of the players contracting the COVID-19 virus).

However, Sharma’s logical explanation was looked down upon as an excuse and he was branded as an “insecure captain” who lacks belief and does not trust his own teammates’ potential of winning matches.

What makes the scenario even worse for the skipper is that the Men in Blue are scheduled to play against some of the easier teams in the near future as compared to the teams they had played just before he assumed the position of the leader. The upcoming series during which Sharma is confirmed to be the captain of the squad consists of playing against the West Indies, followed by Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in March.

If Rohit cant make team win against these minnows ...he should leave Captaincy and give it to Bumrah ... insecure caption ever

That's a negative approach. Moreover, announcing that we will keep changing players will make the newcomers insecure. None can express with the fear of failure. We need to find talented players and back them even if he fails a few initial matches. This is wht MSD did with Rohit.

At the moment, the Indian cricket team is ranked fourth in ODIs whereas the West Indies, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are ranked eighth, ninth and tenth, respectively. In T20Is, the Men in Blue are only second to England whereas Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and the Windies are ranked at the seventh, eighth and tenth spots respectively.
