Virat Kohli’s ‘Cryptic Video’ Turns Fans Into Detectives Before RCB Introduces New Captain

As the franchise prepares to name its new captain ahead of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Virat Kohli has left a cryptic message for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) supporters. Kohli appears to be getting about to make a significant statement in a video uploaded by the team on Twitter before the film abruptly fast speeds and ends.

The film is part of RCB's advertising effort leading up to their 'RCB Unbox' event, where they will unveil the new uniform and name their new captain.

“Renewed Energy. Excited for the IPL season. There’s an important news...” - Virat Kohli has a message for all of you RCB fans!

“So a few updates for you guys. As you know we are going to start our season pretty soon, something which I am very excited for. Really looking forward to this season. First and foremost the most important news is that...” Kohli says in the video.

The former skipper’s excited and smiling face that the theatrics used in the video made the fans of the Bengaluru franchise put on their ‘Sherlock Holmes’ hat and try to decipher what the cricketer was trying to say in the second part of the video that was sped up intentionally.

Many even felt that Kohli might be announcing a return as the RCB captain this year after announcing that he was going to give up the role after the 2021 season.

With AB de Villiers retiring from all forms of cricket, Faf du Plessis, a former Proteas teammate, and Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell are among the frontrunners to take over as RCB captain.

Kohli had stated that he was going to step down as captain of the Indian Premier League franchise after the 2021 season. In the middle of the previous season, the RCB skipper announced the news in a short video released by the franchise's official Twitter handle.

Virat Kohli to step down from RCB captaincy after #IPL2021

“This will be my last IPL as captain of RCB. I’ll continue to be an RCB player till I play my last IPL game. I thank all the RCB fans for believing in me and supporting me.”: Virat Kohli#PlayBold #WeAreChallengers pic.twitter.com/QSIdCT8QQM

While the news of Kohli's retirement came as a shock to many people around the world, it was something the skipper had been thinking about for some time and had even spoken with those close to him, including de Villiers.

Kohli stated he wanted to establish a serene environment during the IPL and quietly move away from his current role as captain to focus on his performance as a batter, citing the strain of presiding over too many things.

Since taking over as RCB's captain in 2013, Kohli has led the team to the playoffs four times (including IPL 2021) and only once to the finals (in 2016). Despite having some of the most aggressive hitters and best coaches in the history of modern cricket on their side, the Bengaluru team has never won the IPL.
