Android Phones To Take Years To Catch Up With The iPhone 8

The iPhone 8 is already being touted as a huge leap for Apple by introducing a smartphone with a completely new design and will have some exclusive features that will set the phone apart from its counterparts. These features are one of the main reasons why a huge debate has started and a new report says that Android will take years to catch up with the upcoming Apple smartphone.

Experts believe that Android smartphones will trail behind the iPhone 8 for as much as three years. You may be wondering why, right? The iPhone 8 is supposed to have a quasi 3D sensing and facial recognition technology that will add an extra layer of security on the smartphone. The same feature is also expected to be used for augmented reality features as Apple has already announced their comprehensive AR Kit platform for developers.

Even though phones like the Galaxy S8 has facial recognition capabilities, it is not as effective as it should be. Sometimes it tends to not recognise the face at all or it can be hacked with pictures. The reason why it can be hacked using pictures is due to the fact that it lacks 3D sensing capabilities. This is also the reason why facial recognition is not enabled for Samsung Pay as it relies on the iris scanner for more security.

The new 3D sensing technology on the iPhone 8 is expected to replace the Touch ID and is apparently going to be used for making digital payments via Apple Pay.  KGI Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo explains that Qualcomm is two years behind Apple when it comes to 3D sensing tech.

Most Android smartphones tend to use Qualcomm's chipsets and the company has not made any significant advancements in 3D sensing technology. In fact, it is expected that Qualcomm will ship chipsets with 3D sensing technology as early as 2019.

Kuo is known for his inside knowledge of iPhone-related details and is famous for accurately predicting features way before Apple even announces their final iPhone lineup. The fact that Kuo claims inside information about Qualcomm's progress in the 3D facial recognising field seem legit due to his track record.

However, we cannot not jump the gun so soon as Qualcomm might be waiting for Apple to announce their 3D facial recognition technology and respond with their own chipset that might do the same job.
