Apple's iOS 11 has been rolling out to devices since Sept. 19 and it is truly amazing. Apple has been releasing frequent updates to bug fixes and stability improvements but updating to a new version can have a slight learning curve. We're here to make the adjustment far easier with some useful iOS 11 tips and tricks.
The new mobile OS works with iPhone 5s and higher, iPad mini 2 and up, and the 6th-gen iPod touch. The shift to 64-bit apps means the 2012 iPhone 5, the 4th-generation iPad, or the 2013 iPhone 5c will remain on iOS 10.
1. Save Storage with new Camera formats:© MensXP
To help save storage, you can save your photos under HEIF (High-Efficiency Image Format) and HEVC (High-Efficiency Video Coding) by going to Settings Camera Formats and checking off High Efficiency. With photos, HEIF offers twice the compression effectiveness of JPEG and can still be shared.
You don't have to think about compatibility when you open HEIF/HEVC media in other apps or send these files to non-Apple devices through the Share sheet because in that case, iOS will automatically transcode them into a more compatible JPEG/H.264 format.
2. The One Finger Keyboard:© MensXP
If you press and hold the globe/emoji icon on your iPhone keyboard you'll see three new icons for the keyboard: left, normal and right.
The “normal” one is self-explanatory, but the other two options compress the keyboard to about 3/4 of its normal size and put it to the left or right of the screen. It makes the letters much easier to reach with your thumb and is extremely handy when using the 7 / 8 Plus.
3. Auto Answer Calls:© MensXP
Go into Settings General Accessibility Call Audio Routing Auto-Answer Calls and actually tell your phone to answer every call received. You can preset a time after which the device will automatically pick up the call.
4. Emergency Mode:© MensXP
Emergency Mode does two things: it'll initiate a call to 911 (or your countries Emergency Number) without you having to open the phone app to dial. It'll also deactivate Touch ID. You can also manually add the number of 2 contacts whom a call can be made to directly, without unlocking the phone.
Go to Settings Emergency SOS. The actual activation is performed when you hit the power button on the side of the iPhone 5 times in a row. You can also enable HealthKit and add some essential information about your age, blood group and other general medical records just in case you happen to land in the Emergency Room.
5. Annotate Screenshots:© MensXP
You can now instantly annotate screenshots before sharing them. No longer will you have to open them in a different app to do it. Just click on the screenshot thumbnail in the lower right corner after you take one, and annotate it. Share it, and you can then delete it immediately from the same interface. You can easily edit/crop the screenshots and use the Pen tools to add a layer of hand-drawn info before sharing.
6. Create PDFs in Safari:© MensXP
While using the Safari web browser, tap on the share icon at the bottom of your screen and select the “Markup as PDF” option. You can add annotations to the PDF and send it out via multiple apps. You can even locally save the file using the file manager or iCloud.
7. Scan Documents:© MensXP
The Notes app in iOS 11 now has a feature to scan your documents. To scan a document, click the plus sign on the bottom of the screen and tap “Scan Documents.” The camera will snap a photo of the document and add it to your notes. The scanning is superb and includes filters to make the results even more legible.
8. Auto - Delete Apps:© MensXP
You can also delete unwanted apps from your internal storage in case you ever need the extra space. iOS 11 can automatically detect your least used apps and offload them from your device if you don't need them anymore. All you need to do is go to Settings General iPhone Storage Offload Unused Apps. But, to disable this you'll have to go to Settings iTunes and App Store Scroll Down and Uncheck
9. Screen Recording:There's only one way you can access this feature: by adding the button to the Control Center in Settings Control Center Customize Controls. Swipe up to get Control Center, hit the round button, and you get a 3-second countdown to the iPhone recording all the moves you make on screen—you'll be able to tell from the red banner on the top.
Want audio with the recording? Use 3D Touch (or press it for a long time) and you'll get an extra option to turn Microphone Audio On—this lets you do a narration as you record. After you are done recording, in-app trimming is super simple and easy to share.
10. Live Photo Effects:© MensXP
The new features for Live Photos include Loop, which repeatedly plays the Live Photo; Bounce, which picks the best start and end points to play the Live Photo forward and in reverse; and Long Exposure, which blends all the frames of the Live Photo together. All three of these features can be accessed by swiping up on a Live Photo and finding the camera effects in a carousel gallery. If you send a Bounce or Loop via the Mail app, iOS converts it into an animated GIF for the recipient.
