Along with the new iPhones, Apple also announced the next-generation of its Apple Watch lineup. Dubbed Apple Watch Series 4, it is a serious upgrade that brings in a bigger display, thinner design, faster processor, and above all, a ton of new features. The new watch face can display a humongous amount of data and is the first thing that will catch your attention at first sight.

The Series 4 now comes in two new sizes--40mm and 44mm; the latter is available as an LTE (cellular) variant as well. Apple Watch now features a 30 percent larger display and it now runs to the edges rather than floats in a black bezel. It is powered by a new S4 chipset that Apple claims is two times faster.

The speaker has been redesigned and is now 50 percent louder compared to the previous generation. The microphone has been shifted to the other side, away from the speaker, to reduce echo. Since its launch in 2015, all the variants of Apple Watch have sported a heart rate sensor, it can notify users about escalated resting heart rate and has already saved many lives.

Apple is now taking health monitoring to another level by the adding the ability to take Electrocardiography readings (ECG). The results of the ECG can be easily shared via a PDF with your doctor and will also be saved in the Health app.

Jeff Williams, Apple's Chief Operating Officer, explains, "We've added electrodes to the back of the Watch, and the digital crown allows you to take an electrocardiogram. Now you can take an ECG anytime, anywhere. You open the app and put finger on the digital crown. Built-in electrodes on the back and crown detect electrical impulses from your heartbeat and it will send them to S4 chip. Takes 30 seconds, and then you get a heart rate analysis."

What's even more exciting is the watch has an improved gyroscope and accelerometer that can now predict if the person wearing it is falling. In case a fall is detected and no movement is recorded on the watch for one minute, it will automatically send out an SOS message.

The Apple Watch Series 4 runs on watchOS 5 out of the box, this brings in a new modular face, three minimal faces, and watch faces based on fire, water, and vapor effects. Obviously, the update will be available to the previous generation of Apple Watch's as well.

The Apple Watch is available in three colors for its aluminum finish, in silver, gold and space grey. The retail price starts at US$ 399 (Rs 28,700) for the GPS-only, non-cellular variant, and US$ 499 (Rs 36,000) for one with both GPS and cellular. It will be available for pre-order starting September 14 in the USA.
