A Bengali Woman Attacked 'Dhokla Eaters' On Twitter & We Grabbed Some Popcorn For What Unfolded

Food is serious business in India. From Mughal conquests that brought biryani to the subcontinent, to our modern headlines surrounding

beef - everything from wars to social unrest can have a gastronomical element here. It comes as little surprise then, that this tweet found itself gaining speed earlier this week, in the wake of Abhijeet Banerjee's Nobel prize win.

Dear Dhoklaeaters

We gave you:
6 Nobels
1 Oscar for Lifetime Achievement
National Anthem
Vande Mataram

We eat fish and motton. Beef and pork.

Keep your Dhokla, Khandvi & thepla away from us.

GET OUT.

Naturally, the post caused major uproar amongst Indian Twitter users. Several called her out for spreading hate amongst Indians:

Eat whatever you want, but please don't hate your fellow Indians!

— ⵢⴷâµâµâ´¼âµâ²¦ â±°âµâ³â´¼âµ (@sanchetd) 15 October 2019

The original poster, @chhuti_is, replied while further establishing her stand with respect to detention camps, and cultural imposition.

We don't, but we also won't tolerate detention camps for Bengalis.

— Aparna (@chhuti_is) 15 October 2019

Sorry if that offended you. But if one forces their language or food habits on us, that would be my reply.

Once you get the Internet going though, it's hard to put on the brakes. Several critical voices rose up - and from both sides of the fence. Gujaratis stood up against the user's message,

Every state has unique identity. We love Dhokla, Khandvi & thepla. It's breakfast, lunch and dinner for us. And I'm proud of being a Gujarati.

While other Bengalis also voiced their dissent.

Dhoklaeaters gave-

Father of the Nation- Mahatma Gandhi
Iron Man of India- Sardar Patel
2 PMs- Morarji Desai, N. Modi
Father of India's space programme- Vikram Sarabhai
Business tycoons- Ambanis & Tatas
6 times Oscar winning producer- Ismail Merchant.

Urs truly,
Also a Bong.

Mukesh bhai also made an inevitable appearance.

Personally, I think the best tweet of all is this one.

I love Indian Twitter. A Nobel Prize for Economics has become a battle between vegetarians and non vegetarians. Sadly, there is no Nobel Prize for idiocy. Now go eat a dhokla or a dimsum - neither will give you a brain. It is not in their job description.

One thing's for sure though - a lot can happen over chutney and dhoklas.
