When you talk about the Indian culture, two entities lead the way amongst other things: Bollywood and cricket. In the past the two entities have come together on multiple occasions and almost every single time, they have not failed to impress.
Having said that, because Indian cricket fans are basically crazy and deserve the best of the best, we have shortlisted seven films and web series that you can appreciate while sitting at home:
1. LagaanThe first commercial hit in the country which took the game of cricket as the centerpiece of the story, Lagaan continues to be a fan favourite in the genre. Set in 1893, with British rule in India, the movie presents a unique way in which oppressed farmers struggle to get rid of excessive taxes levied upon them by the Empire.
To put it in one sentence, Bhuvan (Aamir Khan) takes it upon himself to assemble a team of players to play a cricket match against Captain Russellâs men in a bid to get rid of three years of tax-paying.
The film was not only appreciated in India but also got international acclimation as it became only the third Indian movie to get nominated at the Oscars.
2. IqbalA touching story of speech-and-hearing-impaired fast bowler who lives and breathes to play for the Indian cricket team, Iqbal shows the relationship between an athlete and his coach, despite their personal differences, working together through multiple hurdles towards success and glory.
Shreyas Talpade as Iqbal and Naseeruddin Shah as Mohit (Iqbalâs drunk coach) are absolutely amazing together and do a great job of bringing out the best of emotions from the audience (basically, I cried at the end).
3. Roar Of The LionNow towards some serious stuff, Hotstarâs docu-series, Roar of The Lion gives an insight about the Indian Premier League franchise, Chennai Super Kings, that made its way back into the league after serving a two-year ban for match-fixing allegations.
Former Indian skipper and CSK captain is the star of the show and out of his trust for the director, Kabir Khan, opens up about the scandal that he refers to as the âmost difficult and depressingâ phase of his life.
4. Inside EdgeAh, the cheeky web-series that every cricket fan talks about when they are together. Inside Edge was Prime Videosâs first Indian original series which talks about the behind-the-scenes happenings of the âPowerplay Leagueâ and how the lust for money and power makes individuals indulge in some âunsportsmanlike activities.â
The first season of the show was well received by the critics and audience alike and was even nominated for the Best Drama series at 46th International Emmy Awards.
5. Cricket FeverNetflix decided to enter the world of cricket based docu-series with âCricket Feverâ following the lives of the core members of the IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians. It deep-dives into the lives of team owners Akash Ambani and Nita Ambani and moves towards focusing on their skipper Rohit Sharma and other athletes like Hardik and Krunal Pandya.
The episodes show how the management and the players work towards forming that one unit which would go on to win the 2019 edition of the Indian T20 league and become the most successful franchise in league history.
6. MS Dhoni-The Untold StoryA movie this time, MS Dhoni - The Untold Story captures the former Indian skipperâs life in totality. Right from Dhoniâs days as a young boy, when he was interested in playing football and was the goalkeeper in his school, to his marriage, to winning the 2011 World Cup.
Actor Sushant Singh Rajputâs portrayal of the Indian cricketer and Dhoniâs massive fanbase made this movie a grand success both commercially and critically and became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2016.
7. JerseyThe tale of an extremely talented athlete unable to make his way into mainstream cricket due to politics and losing his livelihood after losing his government job on false charges of bribery, Jersey is a Telugu-language sports drama weaves a story wonderfully around life of Arjun (Nani) and a promise that he makes to his son Nani (Ronit Kamra).
The story was received by the critics who not only praised the drama and the story but more importantly the bonding between the father and son in the film. A Hindi remake of the film with the same title is scheduled to release in August 2020 with Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur in lead roles.
