Uttarakhand CM’s Wife Defends Ripped Jeans Comment, Says Women’s Duty To Save Cultural Heritage

Only a few days after Uttarakhand CM Tirath Singh Rawat was ripped apart by the internet for his comment on women wearing ripped jeans, his wife, former Miss Meerut Rashmi Tyagi, who also teaches psychology at Garhwal University, has come out to defend his comment.

In a video statement on Thursday, according to PTI, she explained, “He said that women’s participation is unprecedented in building the society and the country. It is the responsibility of the women of our country to save our cultural heritage, save our identity, save our costumes.”

A lot to unpack here. I’ll let the public do the talking.

And men, no burden of culture on them??? mrs cm wife.

People who think alike do wed. Wife of CM of Uttrakhand is saying that his comment was ripped out of proportion, when he literally said that women who wear #rippedjeans are setting a bad example.

And men's "duty" Is to criticize and judge every move a woman makes. Fragile male ego at it again.

“He was talking about how we are aping western culture blindly and not following our own traditions and values which are seeped with thousands of years of cultural wisdom,” Prof. Tyagi said, according to Hindustan Times. “But his one word was picked up and blown out of context and wrongly interpreted. He spoke for nearly one hour, but nobody talks about the whole theme he was trying to focus on. Did he say only one word-jeans?”

The CM on Tuesday, describing a woman who sat next to him on a flight, had said, “She runs an NGO, goes out in the society and has two children, but she wears jeans ripped at the knees. What values will she impart?"

What the correlation was, I’m not sure, but surely the first part of the sentence answers the question. What do you think? Do ripped jeans really have the power to make people forget “Indian values, identity, and heritage”? Tell us in the comments below.
