Starring Arvind Swami as MG Ramachandran, Prakash Raj as M Karunanidhi, Jisshu Sengupta as Sobhan Babu, and Bhagyashree as Jayalalithaa’s mother Sandhya, the multi-lingual film is produced by Vishnu Vardhan and Shailesh R Singh.

Thalaivi is directed by AL Vijay and penned by celebrated writer KV Vijayendra Prasad. Poorna and Madhoo also play pivotal roles in the film.

The trailer also shows her relationship with MG Ramachandran (MGR) played by Arvind Swami. After MGR's death, she singlehandedly made it big in the political arena. 

The premise of Thalaivi is described as "The superstar heroine, the queen of romance and the one who rose to power despite a patriarchal political system. The story we all know, the life story we don’t know."

Kangana is said to have gained 20 kilos to play the older portions of the leader's life and then lose the weight for the actress portions of her life.

Well, powerful dialogues like 'abhi toh sirf pankh phailaaye hai, udaan bharna abhi baaki hai.' add to the entertainment quotient of the trailer piquing the interest of the audience.

Last year, in an interview with ANI, Kangana likened herself to Jayalalithaa: “She was a very reluctant actor. It is the same with me. I never wanted to be an actor, and that is why we became very unusual actors.”

“I think she always felt that she was worth much more than just being a glam doll [in films], and she became a politician. Like how I became a filmmaker because I felt that being an actress was very limiting for me. So, I think there are parallels,” she added.

Thalaivi will release on April 23, 2021.
