Anmol Ambani, the eldest son of Reliance Group Chairman Anil Ambani, has called out the Maharashtra government's lockdown restrictions for favoring "professional" film stars, cricketers, and politicians while overlooking the livelihood of the masses.
The 29-year-old Director of Reliance Capital hit out at the government's decision to restrict the work of businesses and other working groups while offering leeway to more privileged classes.
Taking to Twitter, he said the steps were more about establishing a sense of control from the government.
Professional ‘actors’ can continue shooting their films. Professional ‘cricketers’ can play their sport late into the night. Professional ‘politicians’ can continue their rallies with masses of people. But YOUR business or work is not ESSENTIAL. Still don’t get it?
— Anmol A Ambani (@anmol_ambani) April 5, 2021Coining the term "Scamdemic", Ambani said in a tweet, "What does essential even mean? EACH INDIVIDUALS WORK IS ESSENTIAL TO THEM."
What does essential even mean? EACH INDIVIDUALS WORK IS ESSENTIAL TO THEM. #scamdemic
— Anmol A Ambani (@anmol_ambani) April 5, 2021He also took a jibe at actors, sportsmen, and politicians holding large gatherings during rallies by stating, "Professional ‘actors’ can continue shooting their films. Professional ‘cricketers’ can play their sport late into the night. Professional ‘politicians’ can continue their rallies with masses of people. But YOUR business or work is not ESSENTIAL. Still don’t get it?"
— Anmol A Ambani (@anmol_ambani) April 6, 2021— Anmol A Ambani (@anmol_ambani) April 6, 2021Amid the tsunami of Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra recently, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday (April 4) announced his decision to impose complete lockdown across the state on the weekends.
The lockdown will start from 8 PM on Friday (April 09) and will remain effective till 7 AM on Monday (April 12). Other than that, section 144 and night curfew will be imposed on weekdays.
As per reports, under the new guidelines, barring essential services shops, grocery shops, and medical shops, all other stores, markets, and shopping malls will remain shut till April 30.
Cinema halls, parks, museums, and all religious places will also remain closed for public gatherings in order to curb the spread of the virus, which infected around 55,000 people in the state on Wednesday.
Apart from eateries with take away and parcel services, all restaurants will also remain closed under the new guidelines.
While the government believes that its new restrictions will lead to tackling the recent surge in Coronavirus cases in the state, Anmol Ambani labeled it a "very sinister plan" and said that it has nothing to do with the health of the people.
Ambani's dig comes at the back of Bollywood biggies like Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, and Vicky Kaushal contracting the coronavirus this past week.
Following Ambani's stand with the general public and local businesses across the state, his tweets went viral on the microblogging platform, with people also choosing to voice their opinions.
Well said. We need a clarion call for right to livelihood. This lockdown mania has gone too far. No balance, no logic, no data, no science. While Covid is a dangerous disease (for some), there are way too many other concerns in India (for the majority). pic.twitter.com/SjabwH2Bss
— Bhaskaran Raman (@br_cse_iitb) April 7, 2021I feel for the restaurants, eateries especially road side whose basic earnings is during night time sales. Second lockdown is nonsensical when we know what precautions and SOP needs to be followed.
— Capt. Ashutosh (@AshutshMn) April 7, 2021Govt has done nothing to control the virus. Now another lock down has been imposed..only in the state of Maharashtra.
— Aparajita Deshpande (@daparajita) April 7, 2021About time we start fighting for our rights and freedom of movement as per constitution.
Too much damage is already done in the name of social distancing when the countrys government can't even control itself.
@uddhavthackeray please🏼 define essential.. if not Covid people will anyways die of money problems!
— Sameer K (@KumamekarSameer) April 7, 2021well articulated, grt 2 c someone frm elite business class speaking like a common citizen.Yes indeed it's a authoritative kind of governance where v r told daily what is gud/ bad for us , as if all wisdom is with govt only.
Definition of essential is relative !
While some agreed with Ambani's take on the Lockdown restrictions, others said it was the way forward.
Very correct, I do agree to yr concern but at the same time it is the people who hv to understand the fact of the virus erupted in this 2nd wave which is dangerous. All those (whi you mentioned)has to make sure &come frwd to save people of Nation. The way MP CM & Yogiji doing
— kashyap vaishnav (@kashyapvaishnav) April 6, 2021I get your anger. But essential from a consumer point of view. Example : a coffee shop or a fashion boutique isn’t an essential activity for a consumer.
— Pushkar Ambekar (@pushkarambekar) April 6, 2021Some also stressed how the only way to curb the crisis was through vaccination for all.
What govt is attempting is create a perception of doing something given covid is infecting n ppl r dead, but only scientific solution is to vaccinate, allow people who can afford to buy vaccine at whatever price atleast it frees one vaccine for some1 else, remove age limits
