A hard-hitting editorial published in the US medical journal The Lancet said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “actions in attempting to stifle criticism and open discussion during the crisis are inexcusable.”

The publication also criticised India’s vaccination programme saying that the message that COVID-19 was essentially over caused the slow down of the vaccination campaign.
The Lancet also called the policy "botched" and "falling apart” at the central level. The journal also noted that the Government shifted course without even discussing the change in policy with states.
The journal says that India must restructure its response to the rise and success of that effort depends on the government owning up to its mistakes. The journal called for responsible leadership and transparency, and “implementing a public health response that has science at its heart.”
