India’s first-ever fencing athlete at the Olympics, Bhavani Devi’s journey in Tokyo 2020 began with a flourishing start, especially after she won her first match with a dominating score of 15/3 against Tunisia's Nadia Ben Aziz. However, her chase for a medal came to a halt suddenly, when she was faced off against the world’s top-three player Manon Brunet.
Disappointed and heartbroken, Devi shared the message, apologising to the whole nation about not being able to get a victory, despite giving the contest everything that she’d got.
Big Day 🤺
It was Excitement & Emotional.
I won the First Match 15/3 against Nadia Azizi and become the First INDIAN Fencing Player to win a Match at Olympic but 2nd Match I lost 7/15 against world top 3 player Manon Brunet. I did my level best but couldn't win.
I am sorry 🇮🇳 pic.twitter.com/TNTtw7oLgO

Little did she expect, the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi ensured that Devi’s contribution towards the Indian Olympic contingent doesn’t go unheard and responded to her motivation while calling her an inspiration.
You gave your best and that is all that counts.
Wins and losses are a part of life.
India is very proud of your contributions. You are an inspiration for our citizens. https://t.co/iGta4a3sbz

Overwhelmed to see the support, Devi responded with yet another tweet, this time addressing the Prime Minister directly, and talking about how he has been a source of inspiration for the 27-year old fencer.
When ur inspiration icon calls u an inspiration, what better day i can ask for? Ur words motivated me @narendramodi ji, U stood by me even at loosing the match, this gesture & leadership has given me boost & confidence to work hard & win upcoming matches for 🇮🇳

And while the two sides were sharing a moment of mutual admiration, the Indian athlete got drastically criticised for “promoting politicians” and was advised to “focus on sports”. Soon, the whole interaction became more about politics with little to no buzz about the fact that Devi managed to make a land full of cricket crazies get out of their comfort zone and at least Google about fencing:
Focus on sports rather promoting politicians. It will be good for your career in the coming days .

— Dilip (@DilipShan2) July 26, 2021Bhavani,
This was a good start for Indian fencing, this time. Kudos.
But now it's time to cut out the social media paeans and prepare for Paris.
I'm sure that the medallists of Paris 2024 have already begun preparing. https://t.co/stDUnhRuCh
