‘Should’ve Never Listened To Him’ When Sehwag Paid Heavy Price For Following Dravid’s Advice

After his glorious playing career, Rahul Dravid has transformed the lives of many young cricketers by sharing his words of wisdom with them. As a head of cricket at the National Cricket Academy, Dravid is responsible for the development of the next crop of players and his advice has worked wonders for many youngsters.

But if you ask Virender Sehwag he would tell you a different story altogether because he paid a heavy price for listening to Dravid’s advice and missed out on a triple-century against Sri Lanka at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium in 2009

The explosive opener was famous for playing big shots even in Test cricket, irrespective of the score whereas Dravid was known to grind the bowlers out and build his innings in a more traditional manner.

Despite his attacking style, Sehwag is the only Indian player to score two triple hundreds in Test cricket which makes him one-of-a-kind player, someone who instilled fear in the minds of great bowlers of his generation, including Muttiah Muralitharan -- the most-successful bowler in the history.

Having clobbered the Sri Lankan bowlers to all parts of the ground, Sehwag was racing towards his triple century in the final session of the day but curbed his natural instinct after listening to his batting partner Dravid’s advice, who suggested him to save his wicket for the next day.

Sehwag walked back to the pavilion unbeaten on 283 and everyone thought he would complete his triple-hundred with ease on Day 3 as he had dominated the Sri Lankan bowlers the previous day.

The Delhi cricketer added 10 more runs to his tally but got out trying to tap the ball for a single and he blamed Dravid for passing him the wrong advice. Muralitharan, who was at the receiving end of Sehwag’s onslaught in that match, shared the incident with former India cricketer Aakash Chopra on a ESPNCricinfo show.

“I remember he was batting on 290 against us in Mumbai and I think it was Dravid who told him to hang on as he can get to his 300 the next day. The next morning, he tried to tap it but got out caught and bowled and told me ‘I should have never listened to Rahul and instead gone after you’,” Murali told Chopra during the interaction.
