When news first broke that Marvel Studios is bringing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, fans were excited to see the first Asian Marvel superhero. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the 25th movie in the Marvel cinematic universe has made history by casting an Asian superhero in form of Simu Liu. Most of us now know Canadian actor Simu as the lead of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings but he hadn’t always been a sensation.

He told me, “The decision of dressing up as Spider-Man was only financial. I had to pay my bills. When you are a struggling actor, you don’t really make that much. I thought if I will be Spider-Man for kids' birthday parties, I will be working on my acting muscles too.”
I also mentioned that it would be interesting to see a Spider-Man and Shang Chi crossover. To which, he replied, “It would be really interesting and there are comics that are supportive of the theory. Consider me a fan and I can’t wait to see what Marvel and Kevin have planned for the character.”

I think the world is ready for an Asian superhero and I want to show everyone how it feels to fully embrace it rather than to treat it as a burden or shy away from it. I am incredibly grateful for it and I am also hopeful that it opens doors in the future for more superhero movies like this so that many more communities could see themselves like it as they haven’t been portrayed this way. I think it’s a sign of progress.”
