'OTT Platforms Saved Entertainment Industry When Bollywood Couldn't,' Says Manoj Bajpayee

If there's something that the pandemic has taught us in terms of the entertainment industry, it is that no matter how much money or stars you throw into making the grandest of films, it stands to gain nothing without movie-watchers. At a time when cinemas had been shut all over the world and people were locked up within four walls, we realized that the only way that show was to go on, was if it could be shown on a computer or tv screen.

And up went the stake of OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon's Prime Video. Bollywood really has been brought down on its knees with movies clearly not working without people going ahead and paying for it. On the other hand, many content-driven movies and shows like The Family Man, Mirzapur, and now Mumbai Diaries 26/11 have shown the power of OTT.

One personality that seems to echo the same words is the 'Family Man' himself, Manoj Bajpayee.

The talented actor has been winning plaudits for his performance in the Prime Video series and has really seen his popularity rise to insane levels. He too thinks that the OTT platforms have sort of been the savior of the entertainment industry. “This has happened worldwide. There was only one medium of entertainment in a situation like a lockdown when people couldn’t even step out and do anything, forget about watching a film in theatres. OTT has been the only savior for the entertainment industry amid pandemic,” said Bajpayee.

He also mentions how the platform helps people keep away from the negativity and stress of the current turbulent times. “The various shows and films kept them away from all the anxiety and stress. It is the only medium that has kept people entertained. It is a big ocean from where people can choose what they want to watch,” he said.

Another thing that platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, Hotstar, Zee5, and others have provided is an opportunity to work in content-oriented films for actors who, for long, haven't been given opportunities in mainstream cinema.

"All those people who can do some worthwhile job have got the chance to showcase their ability. It is a one-of-a-kind situation. I pray that this time of celebrating talent and quality does not go away. In our country, we often see that talented people were getting almost no due. The OTT has become a miracle for many,” added Bajpayee.

The 52-year-old actor was asked whether he feels that the OTT platforms have reintroduced him to the audience. However, he is of the opinion that instead of that, the platforms have made it possible for him to connect with a vast younger audience.

“I am not being reintroduced to the admirers who were already there. I was not just sitting at home and doing nothing. I was someone who was quite busy when the OTT boom came. The unique thing that has happened to me and my career is that it has taken me to a different kind of a fan base which is teen and young people. The audience of that age was not that aware of my work. Those are the people who are loving and liking my work in the past two years. It has kind of excited them to look at all my other past works. That I find is amazing,” he said.
