Kapil Sharma Shares How ‘Media Reports’ Helped Him Realise He Was Battling Depression

There is a popular saying that people who make others laugh the most are often the ones who are the saddest within.

While no one notices, the most famous comedians like Charlie Chaplin, Jim Carry and Robin Williams have confessed to having depression in their life. Kapil Sharma, who is among the most popular comics on Indian TV, also admitted that he suffered from depression.

His show ‘Comedy Nights With Kapil’ ended abruptly in 2016 despite high TRPs and popularity which left fans devastated and wondering what went wrong.

Well, the reason was that he was battling depression around that time in 2017-2018 and he needed a sabbatical.

However, the comedian says he wasn’t aware of his mental illness and realised it through an unusual incident.

Talking about struggling with depression at an event, he said “So, at that moment, you don’t feel that anything will change because all things seem negative at that time. Don’t know what kind of chemical gets released in your brain that doesn’t allow you to think positively.”

He shared the hilarious way he found out what was exactly wrong and it was media reports that made him realise he was suffering from depression.

“My mother knew nothing about mental illnesses and depression, she is a woman from a small village. Not just her, even I did not have much of an idea about it... Paper walon ka bhala ho jinhone likha ‘Kapil Sharma hue depression ka shikaar’. Mujhe pata chala, accha, ye hai mujhe (Bless those newspaper journalists who wrote ‘Kapil Sharma is a victim of depression’. That’s when I realised what had happened to me’).”

He added that his family and wife Ginni Chatrath supported him through the phase and helped him bounce back.

“But my family gave me strength at the time, especially my wife, Ginni. She knew everything about what was happening in my life. No one else did,” he said.

However, he bounced back and started his show ‘Family Time With Kapil Sharma’ and then ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ which gained the same popularity with the audience and is still going strong.
