After her blockbuster role in Girls Trip in 2017, Tiffany Haddish has been unstoppable. The actor-comedian broke the internet and created history with her hilarious comic timing as the first black female stand-up comedian to host Saturday Night Live in its 43-season long run.

But there is a lot more to her.

In a candid Luminary Original podcast of People’s Party, Tiffany Haddish sat down with hosts Talib Kweli and Jasmin Leigh to talk about the biggest highs and the lowest lows of her life. From her tumultuous childhood to a Hollywood red carpet success and her social work, Tiffany has built herself little by little.
Here are 5 brutally honest moments from Tiffany that prove there is no one like her!
When She Spoke About Growing Up In Foster Care
From surviving a horrific car accident to being thrown into foster care and almost being homeless, Tiffany has had a rough childhood.
At the tender age of 9, she became a mother figure to her siblings as her mom struggled to recover from the brutal car accident. By the age of 12, Tiffany and her siblings had to be put into the foster care system when her mother’s condition led to severe violent bouts.
The foster care system left severe emotional scars. Tiffany talks about the experience, “You’re dropped in these strangers’ houses, you don’t know these people, these people don’t know you, you don’t know if they’re gonna hurt you, if they’re gonna be kind, you don’t have a clue what’s going on”.

    When She Spoke About Adoption
“I’m currently looking, deciding on adopting” revealed Tiffany Haddish.
After her experience in foster care, Tiffany was keen to become a foster parent. But due to her massive success, her lawyers have suggested it’s best to adopt.
Opening up about her decision to adopt, Tiffany revealed that she’d love to adopt older kids, “I want to get somebody that's five and up. You know, already knows how to use the restroom, already knows how to talk, already knows how to communicate. All I want to do is pour knowledge in … (and) get them ready for the big, bad world. That's what I want to do."
When She Shaved Her Head As An Expression Of Self-Love
In July 2020, Tiffany decided to go bald so that she could see her own scalp and get to know her body. This bold decision has helped her fall in love with herself a little more.
Extremely comfortable in her new look, Tiffany revealed that she has grown to love and appreciate her other features like her eyes. Shattering gender stereotypes, she also stated “women should have the freedom to do with themselves what they will.”
When She Revealed She’s A Sexual Assault Survivor
Baring her soul in a candid chat, Haddish spoke about being raped by her aunt’s friend, who was a police officer in training. One night, instead of driving her home from a school dance, he took her to his apartment and raped her. She still shudders at the thought of the violent encounter.

When She Became A Best-Selling Author
For someone who struggled with reading as a child, Tiffany achieved great success with her first book, The Last Black Unicorn, which includes personal essays about her tough childhood but in the most fearless and funny way possible. Why a black unicorn? She gave herself the nickname after kids teased her because she used to have a wart on her forehead.
"I started thinking that unicorns are beautiful. Unicorns are magical. And they're right, I am a unicorn," Isn’t she right!
