Here’s Why People Feel Amrita Rao’s Sanjana In ‘Main Hoon Na’ Deserved Better Than Lucky

Indian cinema is scarred when it comes to a deeper understanding of topics like sexism, feminism, and the portrayal of genders. Many Bollywood movies have promoted sexism blatantly and how women characters have to leave their individuality to be with the man of their dreams. Main Hoon Na is not an exception to this criticism. It’s sad how Amrita Rao’s character Sanjana wasn’t accepted by Lucky played by Zayed Khan when she was herself.

It’s disappointing to see how Sanjana transforms from a “tomboy” like character into an ‘ideal’ Indian woman with straight hair and clothes that show her feminine side. It was after her transformation, Lucky falls in love with her. Shah Rukh Khan’s character Ram, in fact, sent Sanjana to Sushmita Sen’s character to help her change her transform into this avatar.

People on social media have now started a conversation wherein they are sharing their opinions about how Sanjana deserved way better than Lucky. They felt she was selfless and only loved Lucky despite his flaws. Lucky chose to go for her after her transformation. People are bashing Lucky for being a loser.

Here are the reactions:

In an interview with IANS, Amrita talked about what made people notice her in the movie. She said, “Before the era of social media and PR machinery that we are seeing these days, an actor’s popularity and celebrity status was a byproduct of his or her talent. When I entered the industry as a teenager and appeared in films like Ishq Vishk, Masti, and Main Hoon Naa, people noticed me because of my performance, although a film like Main Hoon Na has superstars like Shah Rukh Khan and Sushmita Sen. These days, actors are becoming popular also because of their presence on social media. I think for an actor, being remembered for a character and film is more important.”

She went on to add, “There is nothing wrong with becoming a popular celebrity on social media, just that there is a huge change that has happened. I entered the industry during the transition period. Earlier, it was important to have talent and as artists, we used to sharpen our skills. Now there is something called talent management! In a way, it is a good cultural change that lets artists feel more secure with job opportunities”
