Dravid’s Strong Advice For Kohli & Co. Before Open Nets Session In Alien Conditions

With less than a week left in the start of the Test series against South Africa , the Indian players practised on the centre wicket for the first time at the Supersport Park in Centurion since they landed there.

However, it wasn’t an ideal start as Virat Kohli and Co. were faced with an immediate challenge as the conditions for their first open nets session were pretty hostile. The 22-yard strip had a fair covering of grass on it and if that was not enough even the weather favoured the bowlers, with overcast conditions making batting in the middle even more difficult.

While for the batters, the conditions were hostile but for the fast bowlers it was almost a perfect start to their bowling practice and they made the most of it. There was extra bounce on the wicket and Mohammed Shami bowled a barrage of bouncers, putting the Indian batters in a spot of bother, testing their skills against rising deliveries.

“Today was the centre-wicket practice session. Unfortunately for us it was a fresh wicket with overcast conditions, pretty challenging for the batters. So, the way they went about it today, extremely happy with that,” batting coach Vikram Rathour said.

“We gotta prepare for such conditions. Obviously when we walked we thought it would be sunny. It’s always challenging from bowlers’ perspective as well to hit the right areas. This kind of conditions you get in a Test match you should be able to exploit those conditions,” bowling coach Paras Mhambrey said in the video posted on BCCI.TV.

Before the players began their first practice session in Centurion, head coach Rahul Dravid gave them a strong two-word advice, clearly defining what he expected of them in the practice session. “Quality practice, good intensity,” the 49-year-old is heard saying in the video.

As the head coach of the Indian team, Dravid has set out to achieve something that he couldn’t as a player – win a Test series in South Africa. The Rainbow Nation is the only major cricket playing country where Team India has never won a red-ball series.

The last time Kohli and his men toured the Southernmost country on the African continent, they managed to win the limited-overs series but fell short in the longest format, suffering a 2-1 series loss.
