Shoojit On Why He Won’t Make Sequels For ‘Piku’, ‘Pink’ Despite Being Offered Big Money

Shoojit Sircar has given some of the most powerful and impactful films in Bollywood during his career as a filmmaker, which includes Deepika Padukone starrer Piku, Taapsee’s Pink, Madras Cafe starring John Abrahan, October and recently, Vicky Kaushal’s Sardar Udham.

He is without a doubt one of the most bankable and sought-after directors in the Hindi film industry.

After watching emotion-evoking films like these, the audience expects a part two that takes the story forward or eagerly waits for a film that weaves on the same lines.

However, Sircar doesn’t believe in making sequels until he has a strong storyline that lives up the hype of the original one.

He has not made a sequel to any of his films and recently shared that he has no plans to release a sequel of his films in the near future, to the dismay of fans.

He said, “You need to have a powerful story to do that. I think more or less, we have tried to put in everything on that one film, so I do not know what is left for the second film. I also quickly get bored with the same idea, so I need to move on. That is also the problem.”

He said he has been offered big money to make sequels for his best hits but he has turned them down. “I have been offered big money to make sequels to more or less all my films — Piku (2015), even Madras Café. People ask me for the next part of Pink (2016). I have not found any story to move ahead and make a sequel,” he added.

Piku, for one, had an open-ended climax where Deepika says her father had sorted things for her before he died and we see her and Irrfan playing badminton hinting at a budding relationship. However, there are no sequels on the cards for this film.

He also said that apart from making films, he takes time out and indulges in the other things and activities he loves but he is open to what comes along the way. “I am not a factory, that I will keep churning out films. I am studying, doing gardening, I play football, and a lot of thinking and discussing. Let’s see what comes out.” said Sircar.

He further added, “At the end of the day, it is an expression, art. It comes from pure passion, so it is not my only livelihood that I am dependent on. Yes, I am dependent, but I am not doing this because I have to churn out films and make sure it is running. It is purely what drives me. Only when it triggers me, I move, otherwise, I don’t.”

And we completely agree. He is one of the leading and best filmmakers in Bollywood for a reason; this reason!
