Alia’s 'Gangubai' Beats '83'; Becomes Bollywood's 2nd Highest Monday Grosser Post Pandemic


After facing several delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi was finally released on the big screens last week, on February 25. Featuring Alia Bhatt in the titular role, the much-hyped film has been performing well at the box office since the first day of its release. In the first weekend, Bhansali's ambitious project collected Rs. 39.12 crores in the domestic market.

Well, Gangubai Kathiawadi has also passed the first Monday test with flying colours. On the fourth day, the movie did a business of Rs. 8.19 crores at the domestic box office, taking its four-day total to Rs. 47.31 crores.

Interestingly, Alia's film has also beaten the fourth-day domestic collections of Ranveer Singh's 83. According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Gangubai Kathiawadi has now become Bollywood's second-highest Monday grosser post coronavirus pandemic. Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif's Sooryavanshi, which was released last year after the second wave, is on the first spot with the first Monday collections of Rs. 14.51 crores.

Directed by Kabir Khan, Ranveer's 83 has now slipped to the third spot in the list of Bollywood films with the highest first Monday collections post pandemic with Rs. 7.29 crores. It is to be noted that the sports drama released amid the Omicron scare and underperformed at the box office

Talking further about Gangubai Kathiawadi, the film is based on a chapter from Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens of Mumbai and also stars Ajay Devgn, Seema Pahwa, Shantanu Maheshwari, and Vijay Raaz in pivotal roles

While the film has been receiving a favorable response from critics as well as moviegoers, Gangubai's son isn’t happy with his mother’s portrayal in Gangubai Kathiawadi. Sharing his thoughts in an interview, he said, "My mother has been turned into a prostitute. People are now saying inexplicable things about my mother"
