‘Himmatwala’ To ‘Rocky Handsome’: 5 Holi Releases That Flopped Badly At The Box Office

The greatest time for producers to release their films is during festivals and long weekends, as it gives them an opportunity to make a lot of money at the box office. Holi, the festival of colours, is one such occasion.

Every year, several filmmakers try to book the Holi weekend in advance to release their films. However, not every movie released on Holi turns out to be a money-spinner at the box office.

As the whole nation is celebrating the festival of colours today, let's take a look at the list of Bollywood films that were released during Holi week but failed to make a mark at the box office.

Rocky Handsome (2016) View this post on Instagram

Rocky Handsome, starring John Abraham and Shruti Haasan, was the remake of the Korean film The Man From Nowhere. While the film received appreciation for its action scenes, it failed to click at the ticket window. Directed by the late filmmaker Nishikant Kamat, the film turned out to be a box office failure, grossing only Rs 22 crore.

Bewakoofiyaan (2014) View this post on Instagram

Directed by Nupur Asthana, written by Habib Faisal, and produced by Aditya Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films, Bewakoofiyaan marked the union of Ayushmann Khurrana and Sonam Kapoor for the first time onscreen. While the songs got a good response, the film failed horribly at the box office despite releasing on the occasion of Holi.

Himmatwala (2013) View this post on Instagram

Featuring Ajay Devgn and Tamannaah Bhatia in the lead roles, Sajid Khan's downfall as a director started with Himmatwala, the official remake of the 1983 film of the same name. The film's trailer as well as songs created a huge buzz before its release, however, it turned out to be a huge disappointment for fans. For the remake, Ajay and Tamannaah took on the roles of Jeetendra and Sridevi respectively. But, the old wine in a new bottle failed to make a mark and was a massive flop at the ticket window.

Karthik Calling Karthik (2010) View this post on Instagram

Directed by Vijay Lalvani, Karthik Calling Karthik starred Farhan Akhtar and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles. The advantage of hit music and Holi release too couldn't help the film as it turned out to be a box office disappointment. However, the film later got a good response on OTT and TV.

Teen Patti (2010) View this post on Instagram

Amitabh Bachchan, R. Madhavan, Raima Sen, Shraddha Kapoor, and Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley starred in the film Teen Patti. However, the film's subject and the plot did not resonate with the audience, and as a result, it was largely ignored by moviegoers.

While the above-mentioned films flopped at the box office, several other Holi releases including Akshay Kumar's Kesari, Saif Ali Khan-starrer Race, and Varun-Alia’s Badrinath Ki Dulhania turned out to be big hits.
